Paris Saint-Germain underwhelmed in a 2-2 draw away at RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice in an eventful game at the Red Bull Arena though Mauricio Pochettino’s side rarely looked convincing despite the vast difference in resources between the clubs. Frankly, they were lucky that the hosts did not take their chances during an early siege of the Parisien goal.

Leipzig, eliminated from the competition with just one point from four matches, had taken the lead through Christopher Nkunku in the eighth minute and they missed the chance to double it when Andre Silva’s 12th-minute penalty was saved.

Substitute Dominik Szoboszlai did better from the spot in second-half stoppage time, however, to rescue a point for the Germans.

The French side, without the injured Lionel Messi, are in second place on eight points, one behind Manchester City.

Club Brugge are on four with Leipzig, semi-finalists in 2020, bottom on one.

Leipzig’s performance in the away leg deserved far more than they got and while their league form remains indifferent, on home soil they could put it up to a PSG side who have had Messi to thank for significant contributions in their two Champions League wins so far.

Spanish forward Dani Olmo made his return from injury as a substitute against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga last weekend but it remains to be seen whether he is fit to start for Leipzig.

PSG will be without Lionel Messi after the Argentine was forced off injured at half-time of Friday’s league meeting with Lille, but Kylian Mbappe will return after missing that game with an ear infection.

Sergio Ramos remains yet to make his debut after signing in the summer.
