Reading round off tragic 2024 with heavy home hammering to remain winless and bottom
Reading Women rounded off a tragic 2024 with a 6-0 home defeat to promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers, meaning the club will head into 2025 bottom of the league without a point.
The Royals, as a whole, have endured a rough two years under Dai Yongge, but the Women's set-up has felt the full force of the ownership crisis perhaps the most.
Once proud members of the Women's Super League, finishing as high as fourth and reaching the FA Cup semi-final, the Royals were pulled out of the professional system in 2023 and dropped to part time in 2023/24.
This status was reduced even further to amateur over the summer due to a lack of funding, taken over by the Community Trust and placed into the Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division.
All operations were moved to Slough and a young squad of triallists who were cobbled together over the summer continued to represent the club with honour and integrity.
Under the management of Pedro Bruno, the club have regularly battled adversity to even be able to field a team week-in and week-out.
However, with so much uncertainty surrounding the club, it has evidently impacted the results on the field.
Losing all six of their league fixtures, the Royals sit bottom of the division, albeit with plenty of games in hand over those around them.
Reading do not return to action until January 17, hosting mid-table Sholing at Arbour Park.
