France starlet Raphael Varane could be set for a sensational move to Manchester United, according to reports on Sunday.

Varane, 24, has made 30 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid this season and has been touted as one of the stars of the future since joining Los Blancos in 2011.

But Diario Gol reports that the LaLiga side are considering the sale of the 6ft2 defender in order to bolster their squad.

According to the Spanish outlet, Zinedine Zidane’s men are willing to depart with Varane for £53.5m – less than Liverpool and Manchester City’s moves for Virgil van Dijk and Kyle Walker respectively.

Jose Mourinho, who helped facilitate Varane’s move to the Bernabeu from Lens for a fee just shy of £10m, is keen on a reunion with the imposing centre-back.

The move could spell the end of Phil Jones or Chris Smalling’s time at Old Trafford, with Mourinho eager to find a strong partner for the impressive Eric Bailly.

Bailly, who joined United for £30m from Villarreal in 2016, has been one of the Red Devils’ most consistent performers, though the 23-year-old has seen his time at the club blighted by injury so far.

And the report suggests Mourinho sees Varane as the ideal foil for Bailly in the long-term as United continue to search for a Ferdinand and Vidic-like partnership.
