David De Gea will be pleased to be back in a Manchester United shirt after a difficult summer for Spain.

The 27-year-old is widely regarded as one of the top three goalkeepers in the world, but did not cover himself in glory at the World Cup, with a high-profile mistake against Portugal attracting plenty of criticism in his home country.

And prior to the pre-season friendly between United and Real Madrid, Spanish team-mate Marco Asensio was quick to poke fun at De Gea after his summer mishap.

When he saw his fellow Spaniard in the tunnel, he cheekily called De Gea ‘Karius’ three times, referencing the Liverpool stopper, Loris, who endured a nightmare Champions League final against Real.

But De Gea was not bothered by Asensio’s taunts and the duo clearly share a good relationship, as they hugged and enjoyed a quick chat ahead of the International Champions Cup match.

Despite a disappointing pre-season tour that has been dominated by Jose Mourinho’s constant moaning, United ran out 2-1 winners over Madrid.

De Gea played the full 90 minutes as first-half goals from Alexis Sanchez and Andre Herrera secured the victory, while Asensio came on as a substitute for Real – Karim Benzema scored their goal on the stroke of half-time.

Karius, though, will not appreciate the insult as he fights for his future at Anfield. Alisson has signed from Roma and will be Liverpool’s No.1 for the new season, leaving Karius to decide whether he wants to continue as second choice, or leave for pastures new.
