Police investigating alleged disclosure of a sex tape recorded with a minor have copied the contents of the mobile phone of four Real Madrid football players as they attempt to ascertain which chat groups within the club had access to the video.

Real Madrid said on Thursday evening that four players, one from the club’s Castilla ‘B’ team and three from Real Madrid C, were questioned by police in connection with the alleged distribution of a private video on WhatsApp.

Spain’s Guardia Civil police force said officers had travelled to Madrid from Gran Canaria, where one of the four men had sexual relations with a 16-year-old in June.

Three of the four players were arrested at Real Madrid’s training complex and another was told he was a suspect. They were all questioned and then released pending further investigation by a court in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

The three men arrested were said to be aged between 20 and 21.

The mother of the girl reported the possible crime to the Guardia Civil last week after it had come to her attention that a video of her daughter and one of the four men having sexual relations was in circulation.

According to the Spanish sports paper AS, one of the four players met the 16-year-old at the Amadores Beach Club on Gran Canaria, leading to what is reported to have been a consensual sexual relation. The age of sexual consent in Spain is set at 16.

The player recorded video images of the encounter and distributed it allegedly without her consent on his team’s WhatsApp group chat.

A friend of the girl is reported to have found out that the video was circulating and told the family.

The possible penalties for distributing sexual images of another person without their consent range from jail terms of a few months up to five years, partly depending on whether there was consent for the video to be recorded and kept in the first place.

The fact that the alleged victim is a minor means any eventual punishment could be harsher, with the video potentially being considered child pornography.

Two Spanish footballers, Antonio Luna and Sergi Enrich, were given prison sentences of two years apiece in 2021 for the unconsented recording and sharing a video of the pair having sex with a woman.

They did not go to prison as sentences of two years and less are routinely suspended in Spain for first-time offenders, and both continue to play football professionally.

Real Madrid have said they will “take the appropriate measures” once they have “detailed knowledge” of the facts in this case.
