Stefan Bajcetic has explained his decision to join Las Palmas on loan from Liverpool after his season-long switch to Red Bull Salzburg was cut short. The Spaniard made 19 appearances for the Austrian outfit after reuniting with former Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

But the 20-year-old only started eight times, with his future becoming the subject of speculation after Lijnders was sacked at the start of the Austrian winter break in mid-December.

An unused substitute against Real Madrid during new head coach Thomas Letsch’s first match in charge, he came on as an 85th substitute in their 4-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last week.

But that proved to be Bajcetic’s final appearance for the Austrian outfit, before he completed a temporary switch to Las Palmas last Friday.

The midfielder could make his debut for the club on Monday night as they travel to Girona.

And having been eager to play in his homeland, Bajcetic revealed he believed Las Palmas to be the ‘best option’ for him given the club have a track record of giving opportunities to loanees.

“It was important that the players on loan are also playing and increasing their value here,” he explained at his unveiling. “Las Palmas is a team that plays good football and gives opportunities to players who come on loan.

“I hope there will be some for me too. Considering things, it was the best option for me, I want to grow as a footballer.

"I think I can improve here. I spoke with the coach (Diego Martinez) before signing, and from the start, he gave me a lot of confidence. He is also from Vigo, like me.

“He asked me to bring the attitude I have from my ‘Serbian side’. To come with attitude and commitment, and I told him that will not be lacking."

He continued: "I’m ready to play right away. If the coach gives me the chance, I’ll be there. As a kid, I always played as a centre-back, but when I came to Liverpool I moved to central midfield. That’s where I feel most comfortable.

"I follow La Liga and watched the last game against Osasuna. can bring energy, desire and youth. I see that Las Palmas have been doing well recently. With the new coach and the new signings, things have improved. They are a well-made team.

“I can bring youth, character and a desire to improve. I want to continue with my career and I really want to play in Spain. Las Palmas gave me that opportunity.”
