Records tumbled in Multan on the fourth day of the first Test between Pakistan and England as the tourists racked up a lead with a massive total.

On day three, Joe Root became England’s top Test match run scorer, going past Sir Alastair Cook, but the history being made did not stop there.

Telegraph Sport breaks down the records that fell on a historic day.

1. Brook’s maiden Test double hundred

A previous high Test score of 186 was beaten in an innings that was also Harry Brook’s maiden first-class double hundred, having fallen for 194 for Yorkshire in 2022.

2. Brook’s highest Test score

As well as breaking the 200 barrier for the first time, Brook’s highest Test score also broke the family record of 210 set by his dad for Burley (the family’s local village side in Yorkshire). Brook has mentioned wanting to break that record many times.

3. Brook’s first triple century

Brook became just the sixth England batsman to score a Test match triple hundred – joining Len Hutton, Wally Hammond, Graham Gooch, Andrew Sandham and John Edrich – and the first since 1990.

4. Root’s highest Test score

More history for Root, who went past his previous high score of 254 – also against Pakistan, in 2016 – with a remarkable 262 from 374 balls.

5. Root first England player to reach 20,000 international runs (all formats)

Root becomes the 13th member of this prestigious club, while the next most runs for England in all formats is Cook, who lags behind with 15,737.

6. England’s highest-ever Test partnership

Most remarkably, Root and Brook went past the 411-run partnership set by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey in 1957, which came from 1,140 balls. In contrast, the 454-run stand from the two Yorkshiremen came from just 522 balls. It is the fourth-highest partnership for any wicket in Test history.

7. The highest score by a visiting team in Pakistan

England surpassed India’s innings total of 675 at Multan in 2004 with just three wickets down.

8. Highest score by an Englishman against Pakistan

Brook now has the highest score for England against Pakistan, beating Denis Compton’s 278 in 1957.

9. Highest Test match innings in Pakistan

England went past the 765 scored by the hosts against Sri Lanka in 2009.

10. England’s 823-7 was...

The fourth-highest Test total of all time by any team, England’s highest total since 1938 and the second highest total by an away team anywhere.

11. England’s innings just second time six bowlers have conceded 100 runs or more

Six Pakistan bowlers conceded 100 runs or more, which has a feat only matched by Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in 2004.
