New Huddersfield Town signing Ruben Roosken has described his move as the “best step” for him to make at this stage of his career.

The left wing-back has penned a two-and-a-half year deal with the Terriers, with the 24-year-old joining from Dutch top flight side Heracles Almelo for an undisclosed fee.

Roosken signs for Town after making 15 appearances in the Eredivisie for Heracles this season, as well as featuring 48 times in the Dutch top flight in his career to date. Having initially held talks with the Terriers in the summer, Roosken has now become Town’s first signing of the January transfer window.

And the defender believes that the club are on a “good track” to push for promotion back to the Championship in the second half of the campaign. Discussing his move, Roosken told HTTV: “It’s a pleasure to be here. It feels really good. I spoke with the gaffer last summer and had a good feeling.

“The team is going really good, I saw the last results, they’re keeping a good track at the moment. I felt the atmosphere and the team feeling, and it’s good at this point I think.

“I spoke to a few people, I know the club from earlier when you were in the Premier League, and of course it’s a big club. I had the option to go to the Championship, and play at the bottom of the league, but I think at this time in my career and my age, this is the best step for me at this point.

“At my age, I think you have to go to the club who gets most out of you. It’s good to see a club that has all things together. The team is in a good rhythm and a good flow, so it’s really nice to come in at this point.”

The Dutch defender has played in his homeland for the entirety of his career up to this point, having spells with VV Klazienaveen, Emmen, TOP Oss and Heracles prior to joining the Terriers. Roosken was left encouraged by the discussions that he had with Town ahead of signing, and the wing-back believes he will fit in well with the club’s formation and style of play.

“The first thing I noticed was they seem like really genuine people. I’m a person that does things by feeling, so the feeling was automatically really good,” the 24-year-old added. “The way the trainer sees football, I think I do the same. The system they play, I think it will suit me really well, so they were things that I’m excited about.

“It is part of my game (getting forward). I can play the whole left side, so if it’s free, I’ll take the whole space, and run up and [down], that’s my speciality. You have a little bit of rivalry (for places in the team), but pressure is good. I think it gets more out of me.”
