The recent passing of Manchester United legend Denis Law has stirred a wave of nostalgia among football fans. The former player, who scored a remarkable 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United, is fondly remembered not only for his prowess on the pitch but also for his character off it.

A record buy back in 1962, Law's memory is honoured by not one, but two statues at Old Trafford - placed prominently outside the stadium and within the Stretford End where fans chant and sing.

A heartfelt message was released by the Law family: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace."

They continued to express their gratitude: "We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."

In the comments section of the Manchester Evening News, readers have been sharing their personal memories and tributes to Law. One reader, Mrsumo, reminisced: "Those of a certain age myself included although still at school were lucky enough to see Denis Law play. My path travelled to the Blue side but living in Manchester you couldn't help being thrilled by the great United teams of the 60's and beyond there was a great feeling all around the City. Different times and values but it is another link from the past gone, from both sides, Denis has been added to the list of the greats. From the Blue side. RIP Mr Law."

While Gizzie had this to say: "Yes, like many other older City fans I remember watching Denis Law play for City in my youth. He was a great player for both Manchester clubs... many years later a friend & I couldn't believe our eyes to see him casually walking down the High Street in Penzance. We had a chat to him about football in general, & had a laugh about the old days. We wished him well, & said farewell.. We are so sorry to hear the sad news, & know how much his family will miss him."

LesJohnson writes: "I guess like many older United fans much sadness hits our hearts because the 'magnificent three' have now left us. Charlton, Best and Law, in the history of our great club will never be forgotten. I have great memories as a nipper seeing them all live tormenting defences up and down the country, my greatest memory: Standing in the Old Chicken Run at Upton Park watching the 3 of them ripping Bobby Moore's West Ham to shreds, it was awesome! 'The Law Man' was a genius at sniffing goals supplied by Charlton, Crerand, Best, among others. I have written my autobiography about my life and how I became a dedicated lover of United since 1957, and Denis was my super-hero (plus Best of course). Only Mon Dieu touched my footballing heart as much as Denis did, both 'Enfant Terribles' on the pitch, but gentlemen off it, greatness indeed. A very sad day as we lose yet another United hero, but his legacy is immortal and I will take that to my grave too!"

MattBusbysAces adds: "My favourite player ever. The King. You say that and everybody of a certain age knows who you are talking about. He was offered to Utd by the Huddersfield Chairman in 1957. Busby had to say no because we had Taylor, Viollet and Whelan. But he found his home eventually. He was loved and adored and we never lost that affection. Thank you Denis."

Jheatley believes: "Denis Law did it all at Man City but is overshadowed by his days at Old Trafford with a loaded team. The one finger salute after scoring goals was his way of celebrating but Man City fans will never forget him scoring seven (7) goals in an FA Cup tie at Luton and end up on the losing side. Six goals in the first game which was abandoned when leading 1-6 and then scoring the side's loan goal in the replay's 3-1 defeat. Never to be forgotten, thanks for the memories Denis. RIP."

Cartera comments: "RIP Denis. Football genius. Saw him for United many times before he returned to City and gave me my equal most exciting moment as a City fan with the backheeler in 74. I was there in the scoreboard end, about 15 yards away from him. It took the Aguero goal in 2012 v QPR to match the excitement of that day."

Iplayedwithsirbobby adds: "What is there to say, RIP Denis, the memories. What a player. Him and Greavesy lit up the sixties - my brother was a Tottenham fan so we'd always argue as to who was better. I live in the States but my brother just called to tell me of his passing. The last of the trinity."

Pinklemo writes: "Great player and a pleasure to watch sad day for football. Liverpool fan myself and he was before my time as I was born in 74. Well respected on Merseyside. Dennis Law YNWA"

Seanguitar says: "The King may have vacated his Manchester United throne but it will remain empty forever. There will never be another like Denis Law. I had the good fortune to meet Denis numerous times during his playing days and although I was just a star struck young boy he always remembered my name and took the time to talk to me and give me advice on how to improve as a player - (along with George Best) - long after the rest of the team had gone. Denis was a true gentleman, a once in a lifetime talent, and a joy to watch playing for his beloved Manchester United and Scotland."

Usafan comments: "Thank you for the great times you gave me, I consider myself one the lucky ones who saw him play with the other Trinity players whilst standing the in Stretford end during the 1960's. You will be sadly missed."
