Retirement, January transfer option - how 14 players who left Man United in the summer have fared
The January transfer window opens in a week's time and Ruben Amorim may look to explore ways to improve Manchester United in the market.
But, to do so, United will have to sell players in order to buy players and there could be a significant turnover of players as Amorim looks to mould his ideal squad.
Similarly, in the summer, Amorim's predecessor Erik ten Hag signed five first team players but 14 senior stars headed for the Old Trafford exit door.

Now that a few months have passed, the Manchester Evening News have taken a look at how those 14 United players have fared since leaving the club.
Scott McTominay
There was a tinge of sadness when the United academy graduate left in the summer but the Scotland international midfielder has thrived in Serie A with Italian side Napoli.
Dubbed 'McTomadona' by Napoli's fervent supporters, he has quickly established himself as favourite with the fans and with his manager Antonio Conte.
The 28-year-old has scored four goals, including an equalising goal at the San Siro against Inter Milan, and registered three assists and has been central to Napoli being involved in the Serie A title race.
Mason Greenwood
The 23-year-old's departure from United was the best outcome for all parties and he has gone from strength to strength since linking up with former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille.
Greenwood has scored 10 goals in 15 matches for Les Olympiens to help them up to second in the Ligue 1 table and the nearest challengers to PSG in the title race.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka ended his five-year association with United when he made the move to West Ham United in the summer.
The Hammers replaced David Moyes with Julen Lopetegui and spent big in the transfer market as they looked to continue to challenge to qualify for European football.
And while their start to the season has been underwhelming, Wan-Bissaka has been one of West Ham's few success stories.
He has scored twice and has earned praise for his defensive performances as he has established himself as a mainstay in the Hammers side.
Willy Kambwala
Amid United's injury struggles last season, the 20-year-old defender made the step up to the first team and made 10 appearances in all competitions.
But with the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt in the summer, adding to the fact United already have Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans as options in the centre of defence, Kambwala's pathway to more first team appearances was blocked.
So when Spanish side Villarreal came calling, Kambwala was ready to take the next step in his career. However, the French youth international has found first team opportunities to come by, making just four appearances in all competitions this season.
Hannibal Mejbri
Hannibal was seen as one of the most talented youngsters in the United system and after a successful loan spell with Birmingham City in the 2022/23 season, he was kept around the United first team squad during the first half of last season.
After making 10 appearances, the 21-year-old was loaned to Spanish side Sevilla where he was restricted to just six appearances.
In the summer the decision was made to part ways with United and Championship side Burnley signed the Tunisia international on a permanent deal.
He has found himself in and out of the side but has played his part in Scott Parker's side mounting a promotion bid with the Clarets heading into Christmas in third place in the table.
Facundo Pellistri
Pellistri made his final appearance for United as a substitute in August's penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.
The Uruguay international made the move to Greek side Panathinaikos after that and has made 21 appearances across the Greek Super League, Greek Cup and the Europa Conference League.
Alvaro Carreras
Such has been the impression Carreras has made at Benfica since joining in the summer, United have been linked with a move to re-sign the left wing-back in the January transfer window.
The Spanish under-21 international has established himself as a key player in a Benfica side who are embroiled in a three-team title race in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, and who are on course to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds.
Amorim is thought to be a fan of the 21-year-old and given the injury problems that have plagued Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United could look to activate their buyback clause to bring him back to Old Trafford.
Donny van de Beek
Van de Beek arrived at United amid much fanfare from Ajax in the summer of 2020 but his career at Old Trafford just never took off.
The Dutchman worked with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag but could never break into the side. After unsuccessful loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt, Spanish side Girona handed him a permanent escape route in the summer.
The 27-year-old looks to be enjoying his football again and has played regularly in both La Liga and the Champions League this term.
Raphael Varane
Varane left United on a free transfer in the summer, signing off with an excellent performance in the FA Cup final against Man City.
He joined Italian side Como, who are managed by former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas, but after picking up a knee injury, the 31-year-old announced his retirement from football after making just one appearance for his new side.
Omari Forson
The 20-year-old was seen as one of United's brightest academy talents and made seven appearances for the first team last season.
He failed to agree on a new contract, though, and joined Italian side Monza on a free transfer as he looked for more first team opportunities.
The youngster is yet to make a start in Serie A and has made just six appearances in all competitions.
Jadon Sancho
Sancho's time at United just didn't work out how anybody expected. Having excelled for Borussia Dortmund, Sancho never really settled at United and failed to hit those heights at Old Trafford.
A public fallout with Ten Hag last season saw him exiled from the first team but a loan return to Dortmund rekindled his career as he helped them reach the Champions League final.
He has since joined Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy him next summer and Enzo Maresca is getting the best out of him at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old has established himself in the first team and has two goals and five assists to his name. All the signs suggest Chelsea are getting the player United thought they were signing.
Anthony Martial
Martial's £50million move to United in the summer of 2015 created a huge media storm and while he enjoyed some excellent moments, his career at United petered out.
So much so that he was allowed to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer and he now plies his trade in the Greek Super League with AEK Athens.
The 29-year-old has five goals and two assists to his name this term and looks to be enjoying life in the Greek capital.
Sofyan Amrabat
Amrabat's loan move from Fiorentina last season was not made permanent.
Instead, he made a loan move to Fenerbahce where he has linked up with former United manager Jose Mourinho. The Moroccan international was part of the Fener side who drew 1-1 with United in the Europa League earlier this season and he has been a mainstay in the centre of their midfield.
Brandon Williams
The 24-year-old helped Ipswich Town win promotion to the Premier League during a loan spell at Portman Road last season but he was long out of favour at United.
The academy graduate wasn't offered fresh terms in the summer and is yet to find a new club since leaving United.
