The Rugby Football League has confirmed that salary cap and quota dispensations relating to Salford Red Devils players have been rejected - but have left the door open for further proposals moving forward.

In a meeting of clubs on Tuesday, clubs voted against proposals that would have allowed clubs up to salary cap and with a full allotment of quota spots to sign Salford players regardless in light of their growing financial concern.

A fire sale is set to begin now, but only clubs who are in a position to sign players within the current restrictions will be able to negotiate deals with the Reds. Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Leigh Leopards, Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves are the clubs currently in that position.

Salford actually voted in favour of the proposals and they have now run out of time when it comes to securing investment that would alleviate their current crisis. As such, they have been left with no other option to sell their players.

However, for clubs like Hull KR and Leeds Rhinos, who have been linked with Nene Macdonald and Kallum Watkins respectively, their hopes have been cooled, for now at least, following Tuesday's vote. However, in a statement issued to Rugby League Live, the RFL did leave that door open for other options to be looked at moving forward.

An RFL statement read: "Clubs were updated on the position at Salford following the conditions placed on the advance in their central distribution in December, and a number of options were considered – at this stage no changes have been made to salary cap regulations, but further proposals may be considered."
