The Rugby Football League will review some of it's new disciplinary guidelines following criticism from Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess.

The governing body has introduced a new points-based system for player offences this year, with suspensions only coming once a player reaches a certain point within a 12-month period. Smaller gradings would carry little suspension, while repeated offenders would cop big bans. However, the points system was controversially scheduled to carry on the players' record from 2024, with the RFL now 'reconsidering' some of the finer details under a system that would have seen Hull FC's Ligi Sao just one point away from a four-game ban.

Meanwhile, Burgess claimed he initially only found out about the system through the media and was only told by the RFL on Thursday. He also aired his views on the system, saying it was unfair that points carried over into a new system when players have already been punished last season.

The former South Sydney Rabbitohs and England forward also said he wouldn't 'accept' any sanctions coming from Friday's game against Widnes Vikings, which the latter won 36-22. However, the RFL have now posted a statement for the first time, with the Super League season beginning next month.

"All clubs were circulated with changes to the on-field sentencing guidelines for 2025 in mid-December," it read. "These guidelines are for Betfred Men’s and Women’s Super League, plus Betfred Championship and League One. The changes followed consultation with clubs at all levels in the mid-season regulatory meetings in May 2024, and ratification by the RFL’s Laws Committee – which includes representatives from clubs, coaches and players - followed by approval by RFL Board.

"While there is support for the broad direction of travel, following feedback from various levels of the sport, the RFL has agreed to reconsider some of the detail of the changes, specifically relating to historic charges (from the 2024 season). The final version of the guidelines will therefore be published in the first week of February, before the Third Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup, and following a scheduled meeting of Laws Committee on January 29, which is followed by the RFL Board – as well as further consultation with clubs and other stakeholders."
