Richie Myler confirms Hull FC in market for players as stance given on Sneyd and Cross
Richie Myler has confirmed that Hull FC are still in the market for new players, with the club keeping tabs not just on the situation at Salford Red Devils but also on other players at other Super League clubs as well.
The Black and Whites are very much open to strengthening their first-team squad for the 2025 season and have both resources and the salary cap to do so. Meanwhile, the Reds are still waiting on new and expected investment being finalised into the club, with a player sale threatened this off-season should the investment fail to go through.
That has seen Hull in for the likes of Marc Sneyd and Deon Cross, as first reported by Hull Live, with Salford’s deadline to complete recent investment talks coming at the end of this week before January's pay deadline. That, in a worst-case scenario, would open up a player sale with Myler, while indicating that the deals at this stage look unlikely, declaring that Hull have not withdrawn their interest in both players while other targets from other Super League clubs are on their radar.

However, Myler, promoted to CEO this month, admitted he is content with the squad Hull have assembled but is also keen to bring in two more players at some stage this season. Speaking at the club‘s media day, he told Hull Live: "Like everyone else, I'm waiting with baited breath to see what happens with the Salford situation. We are in the market for players, and we've got scope to bring them in. There is salary cap space there that is available for us to bring in the right player.
"We have made approaches for players from Salford; we all want a strong Salford, and we need to go around with 12 teams. Personally, as a rugby league fan, I want Salford to be there. There have been assurances made that will be the case, and we hope that it will be, but equally, we are still in the market for players to become available. The lads (Sneyd and Cross) are talented players that would add to our group.
"We feel like we've got a very good core of players at the moment. We've got probably 23/24 players that would be in week in, week out, and then our younger players. If we can bring in two more players that are going to fight for starting spots, that's definitely the element that we need to go for. We are in the market for that, but whether that is somebody from Salford or somebody from somewhere else, we don't know, but we are in the market for players."
Asked about Hull's pursuit for Sneyd, Myler continued: "Marc is a different one because he doesn't have an agent, and as a club we can't speak to him directly. I've had many conversations with Paul King about players and have said we'd be interested.
"We said to Paul King that if there was a situation where they allowed him to leave, we would offer X amount of money. With other players who have agents, we've been able to speak to their representatives, but terms didn't really get discussed due to the fact Paul King is going down a different route and is holding out for investment.
"Ultimately, Deon is under contract with Salford, and if Paul King doesn't want to sell him, even if we've offered a transfer fee for him, it's irrelevant."
In the meantime, Hull's options are Aidan Sezer and Cade Cust, with Myler backing the duo to be a success, having trained together all of pre-season.
"Their pre-seasons have been strong, and they have both trained in that position together for a long period of time through pre-season," he explained. "Jordan Abdull wasn't able to train throughout pre-season, so Cade and Aidan, along with Jack Charles and Callum Kemp in that mix, have confidence in there, plus with John Asiata in as a leader. They give a good dynamic.
"John (Cartwright) is very comfortable on it, to be honest. He likes players who can play multiple roles; Zak Hardaker can play there, and Jordan Rapana can too, so I believe he's confident in the players he's got, but we are always actively looking for the right fit to come in. That might be another 14, or it might be another middle. It could be anywhere. Anyone who would make the starting team better we would be interested in."
Myler also confirmed that Jordan Abdull's departure wasn't in correlation with a move for Sneyd, with the CEO wishing the half-back well after his exit earlier this month.
"It was a difficult one because obviously we really wanted it to work," he added. "Jordan undeniably has lots of talent, and everyone who has seen him or been against him has been underneath those spiral bombs that are horrible to catch knows that. He just couldn't get on the training field, unfortunately.
"The decision was made at the club to move forward and to stand for what we want to try and build here, so if people can't quite get to that standard, you have to make a tough decision, and it was a difficult decision. We wish him all the best, and hopefully he does recover and he is able to perform at a level that he can get back to."
