Hull FC CEO Richie Myler believes rugby league's new December 1 deadline could see some players leave for their new clubs before the expiration of their current contracts. The date for out-of-contract players to talk to rival clubs was brought forward this off-season, from May to December, mirroring the NRL recruitment cycle.

However, it now means that players can tie up their futures with other clubs, should they desire, a full year before they join them. That could, in theory, see players jump ship early, with Myler, who reaffirmed that the Black and Whites are still in the market for new players, explaining a new 'dynamic' for Super League clubs this year.

Speaking at Hull FC's media day, Myler said: "It's a different dynamic. December 1, you're making a decision on a player before they've even played that coming season. It's the same for other clubs; we've been going through rosters and thinking, 'Well, this player is available; how about a conversation with them?'

"It's throwing in a different dynamic into it, and especially the question of when can we announce them. That will be the next one. When can we announce that we've signed a player without annoying anybody?

"I think it's a good concept, and it throws in another dynamic of social media and media attention; it's fun, actually. You may see some people leaving early because they get disgruntled at a club, 'Well, he's signed here for three years, so why on earth are we keeping him?' You might get that dynamic, which I think some people might be trying to push, but not me at the minute."

Myler also admitted that Hull FC's recruitment process for 2026 and 2027 is also underway, with the club, while striving to improve an area where they have fallen short in recent years, determined to not block the pathways of their current young stars. He also confirmed decisions will be collective between himself, John Cartwright, and his coaching staff.

The CEO added: "The way the club has recruited over a period of time without speaking out of turn, we're changing that process, and there's more of a collective decision between all of the coaching staff. They're actually planning 2027 and where our recruitment holes are going to be.

"We want to promote a lot from within. The St Helens model and Wigan is the best model, where they see a young centre coming through in two to three years time, so they don't put too many roadblocks in front of him, but also with the element of fixing our top product.

"The pathways of where we see players progressing and where we think we need to recruit are ongoing on a weekly basis. That's more of a collective effort from everybody. It's not just one person making a call on a player."
