Riders let lead slip away, bested by Colcord 13-9

Apr. 19—A late comeback from Colcord put out the Hulbert Riders' hopes in the second round of the Checotah Tournament.

After leading 8-4 in the fifth inning, the Riders let the lead slip away, allowing 9 runs over the last two innings. CHS took the 13-9 win on Friday, April 20.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, but the Riders picked up their big inning to break the game wide open.

HHS opened the game recording a pair of outs. A two-out single from CHS and a steal set the table for an HHS error. After a ball got past HHS shortstop Logan Beeler, CHS was leading 1-0.

Despite being down, the Riders came out strong in their half of the first inning. A walk to Sam Hubbard and a single from Beeler opened the door for Ethan Ellis. A fielder's choice of Ellis' bat tied the game 1-1 for the Riders.

In the top of the third inning, an error from the Riders started the inning. A walk and a single quickly gave CHS a 3-1 lead. A ground-out gave CHS another run to extend their lead to 4-1.

Although they gave up a trio of runs in the third inning, the Riders weren't backing down and picked up a run of their own in the third. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Hubbard was able to come around on a steal of home plate.

After picking up their run in the third inning, the Riders broke out in the fourth inning for 5 runs. After back-to-back walks, the Riders tied the game with a Johnny Torres single. A fielder's choice from Hubbard gave the Riders a 5-4 lead. HHS was able to take advantage of a pair of walks and a dropped third strike to take a 7-4 lead.

HHS added a run in the fifth inning after Anthony Torres reached on a walk. One batter later, Ty Wynn brought him in with a triple to make the score 8-5.

Despite letting the Riders run out to a lead, CHS wasn't done. In the top of the sixth inning, CHS took advantage of a lead-off base hit that came around on a single. An error added ate away at the Riders' lead. Two more errors followed the first one, allowing CHS to tie the game at 8-8. A passed ball gave CHS their first lead since the fourth inning.

HHS responded with a run in their half of the sixth inning to tie the game back up at 9-9. With two outs, Ellis reached on a single and was eventually brought around on an error. Although they picked up a single and a walk, the Riders weren't able to score another run.

After the Riders tied the game, CHS would once again have a big inning at the plate, this time picking up 4 runs. A pair of singles and an error were big in opening the inning up for CHS to take the 13-9 lead.

After back-to-back strikeouts and a ground-out, the Riders fell to CHS in round two of the Checotah Tournament.

The Riders will be back in action for the final day of the tournament on Saturday, April 20. At the time of publication, their opponent is not known.
