Rio Ferdinand has taken a cheeky swipe at both Tottenham and Arsenal as they continue their respective Premier League campaigns.

Spurs, under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, started the season strongly but have since slipped to fifth following a run of four consecutive defeats. The latest was a 4-2 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool, prompting Ferdinand to quip "there's something in the water" in north London.

Ferdinand shared his thoughts on the Vibe with FIVE podcast, saying: "I watched the game. Actually the first five or 10 minutes, I thought, 'Ooh, they're in for a game, Liverpool, here'," He added: "Spurs, you can see the lack of confidence, because they couldn't react to that shift in momentum.

"Sometimes, you get rocked in games and you can sturdy your feet and get back into it, but Spurs never looked like they could do that. I think the games recently [four straight defeats] have really knocked them for six and confidence is dead. It's shot."

Meanwhile, Arsenal are still battling to keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table. The Gunners are currently one point ahead of their rivals at the top of the table, but City do have a game in hand.

Fellow presenter Joel Beya didn't hold back in his critique of Spurs, highlighting the embarrassment of getting "slapped up" in London derbies following their recent defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal. The other presenter Stephen Howson then sarcastically commended Tottenham, suggesting it was tough to keep up performances after Postecoglou's team "won the league in October".

That prompted a response from Ferdinand who quipped: "There's something in the water in north London." It alluded to Arsenal's previous season's early success followed by a disappointing finish. Howson then added: "Yeah, [and] it ain't champagne."

Spurs, having endured four challenging matches against top-tier teams, now look forward to a more manageable game at home against Burnley, who are fighting to avoid relegation, this Saturday. Next, they welcome Manchester City, a side that hasn't secured a victory at Tottenham's ground since 2018, with Spurs potentially doing their north London rivals a favour.

Arsenal are set to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, aiming to maintain their lead at the summit of the Premier League while adding to United's troubles after their 4-0 thrashing by Crystal Palace. The Gunners' supporters are eager to claim victory over Ferdinand's former club and advance their quest for their first league title since 2004.
