Liverpool have added teenager Rio Ngumoha to their Champions League squad for the second half of the season. The Reds topped the inaugural league phase after winning seven of their eight matches to book their place in the round-of-16.

Arne Slot’s side will face Paris Saint-German/Brest or Benfica/Monaco in the final 16, depending on who progresses from the knockout phase play-offs and which side of the draw they find themselves for the knockout stages.

Liverpool submitted a 24-man squad for the first half of the season. And while they did not sign any new players in January, they have made two minor changes to their quota.

Following the sale of Tom Hill to Harrogate Town, the Reds have removed the midfielder and added Ngumoha to their squad instead.

The 16-year-old, who joined the club from Chelsea last summer, made his debut in the FA Cup third round against Accrington Stanley last month. However, he had been ineligible to represent the club in the Champions League during the first half of the season.

While young enough to qualify for a place on ‘List B’, the winger has not been on Liverpool’s books long enough to be registered on the list. Consequently, he has to be named in their 25-man squad to be eligible to play in the Champions League.

Clubs are required to name eight locally-trained players, of which at least four must be club-trained, if they wish to name a full 25-man squad.

Including Hill, Liverpool had seven such players which is partly why they had been limited to a 24-man quota in the first half of the campaign, with a number of their players - including Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott and James McConnell - also still eligible for a place on ‘List B’.

But following the departure of Hill in January, they have managed to find space for Ngumoha. This is because Amara Nallo has now celebrated his 18th birthday.

Both the centre-back and Trey Nyoni were named in Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the first half of the season and made their debuts against PSV Eindhoven. But, like Ngumoha, the teenagers have not been with the Reds long enough to qualify for a place on ‘List B’.

‌Still only 16, Ngumoha is technically not yet eligible to be classified as locally-trained as you have to be on your club or a club in the same association’s books for three entire seasons or for 36 months between the ages of 15 and 21.

But Nallo - who will be suspended for the round-of-16 first leg after getting sent off against PSV Eindhoven - celebrated his 18th birthday in November, so he now technically counts as association-trained.

The centre-back has essentially taken Hill’s place as one of Liverpool’s locally-trained players, with Ngumoha then able to fill the remaining berth as one of the Reds’ maximum of 17 non-locally trained players.
