Rob Baxter provides further details as trio of Exeter Chiefs stars set for surgery
Exeter Chiefs have lost winger Olly Woodburn and tighthead prop Ehren Painter to ACL injuries to add to the club's injury woes with star winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso poised for surgery on a dislocated shoulder.
Star England winger Feyi-Waboso suffered a dislocated shoulder against Sale Sharks in a Gallagher Premiership match pre-Christmas and the best course of action for his recovery is still being decided, with the new PGP agreement with the RFU and Premierhsip clubs meaning England Rugby's medical department also have a say in his treatment, although director of rugby Rob Baxter made it clear the final decision lies with the player.
Should he choose to go for an operation, Feyi-Waboso is booked in for a procedure next week with his recovery expected to take around three months. Baxter admitted having England's medical team weighing in on the decision for the first time since the new agreement was signed off in the Autumn has slowed down the process. He said: "I think it would certainly have happened quicker, without a doubt. We had things booked, ready to go, decisions ready to be made a week ago. The process that you have to go through now has certainly slowed things down. Now that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong."

Twenty-two-year-old Feyi-Waboso will mend and mend relatively quickly, but there is greater concern around 33-year-old Woodburn and giant forward Painter who both have complications around their knee injuries, Baxter confirmed.
Woodburn left the field with a knee injury in Chiefs’ festive fixture against Gloucester at Sandy Park on December 29. Following scans, it has been confirmed the winger suffered an ACL injury and he will undergo surgery before rehabbing with the Chiefs medical team.
Painter, 26, also suffered a significant ACL knee injury in training ahead of the Gloucester fixture and is booked in for surgery.
Speaking to DevonLive, Baxter said: "I am concerned about both Olly and Ehren. Unfortunately they're not just straightforward ACLs, nice and clean. Both of them involve other things, either other ligaments or cartilage and bits and pieces. So they're both not straightforward. Ehren's is worse. He's got a fair bit of cartilage damage in there. He's going to be in a multiple operation situation and any big operation can cause issues down the line.
"The one thing I will say is that I think Olly is particularly diligent in how he looks at his body. He's had a couple of very, very good years for us. They're largely based on his day-to-day maintenance, how he's not deconditioned in off seasons, how he's been very good through each preseason over the last two or three seasons. So there isn't necessarily an indicator other than his age, that it becomes a major issue."
Baxter also confirmed star full-back Josh Hodge broke his hand in Chiefs’ New Year clash with Leicester Tigers at Mattioli Woods Welford Road last weekend. He said: "It's a concern but it's not at this stage a huge concern. He's broken his hand, but it's a stable fracture and it doesn't require surgery so it could be relatively short-term. It could settle down in two, three, four weeks it's not it's not one that we're anticipating needing an operation or plate in it from the initial x-rays. It's going to be one that will settle on its own and we will manage conservatively and hopefully just get him back up and running as soon as possible."
Baxter confirmed 22-year-old winger Paul Brown-Bampoe has been recalled from his loan at Plymouth Albion to provide cover in the backline after losing a trio of starters in that position in the last month, but confirmed he does not intend to turn to the transfer market to bolster his squad in the backs.
