Rob Gronkowski Says He Might ‘Come Back to Football’ If This 1 Thing Happens on Super Bowl Sunday (Exclusive)
The retired NFL star made a bet ahead of his return to FanDuel's "Kick of Destiny" on Super Bowl Sunday, one he tells PEOPLE could bring him back to the NFL
Rob "Gronk" Gronkowski's cleats may not be hung up for long!
The former New England Patriots tight end spoke with PEOPLE exclusively about his return to FanDuel's anticipated "Kick of Destiny" on Super Bowl Sunday, and made a bet that could take him out of retirement.
The Kick of Destiny stage will look a bit different than the past two years, in which Gronkowski was 0-2 in his attempts to kick a field goal. This time, the retired tight end will host the competition while Eli and Peyton Manning face off in attempt to score.
"I'm not kicking at all. I booted myself out of Kick of Destiny 3. I literally kicked myself out," jokes Gronkowski about the annual competition tradition, which will take place live in the 3:00 p.m. ET hour of the Fox Super Bowl Pregame Show.
The contest, held in the Super Bowl host city of New Orleans this year, will begin with each Manning brother attempting to kick a 25-yard field goal to win Kick of Destiny 3. If there's no winner after the initial round of kicks, they will get additional attempts.
If a tiebreaker is needed after three rounds, the brother who kicked it closest to the center target in the last round will be named the Kick of Destiny champion. This, meanwhile, is where Gronkowski's bet — and future career status — is put on the line.
"If Peyton and Eli both don't make a field goal, my morale will be picked back up again because it just shows how hard it is," the retired athlete tells PEOPLE. "That will give me the morale boost... and that might get me to come back to football," he states.
"Right there... Right there. That could be it," emphasizes Gronkowski of his bet. "They both have to totally miss."
The retired NFL star hung up his cleats in 2022 after 11 seasons in the league. He played nine seasons for the New England Patriots, then played his final two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he became a Super Bowl champion for the fourth time.

Along with Gronkowski having a potential career resurgence on the line, fans can also guess whether Eli or Peyton will be named the Kick of Destiny 3 champ on FanDuel's Sportsbook app with a free bet, and if correct, they'll secure an equal share of $10 million in Bonus Bets.
With Eli and Peyton being known for their great arms — and not their kicking skills — as respective Super Bowl-winning QBs, they've been working with Gronkowski to strategize.
"I'm here to support them with all my heart," the tight end tells PEOPLE of working with the Mannings to prepare them for what he calls, the "biggest stage for all kickers in the whole entire world."
As seen in FanDuel's latest campaign, Gronkowski sits down with the Mannings to review the tapes from his previous failed attempts to see what went wrong (and to note what not do to when they give it whirl for themselves this year).
"They broke me down pretty hard in the film review," Gronk admits. "Even though they never kicked before in their life, they somehow had every answer on why I missed. It was pretty impressive," he adds.
Plus, Gronkowski says, "They didn't like my pregame face. They said that I was off with my face. My facial expressions were off."
The Mannings also spotted that Gronkowski's chin strap was askew, a criticism he agrees with. If the "chin strap is crooked," then his "kicks are going to be crooked," the former Patriot says. In keeping with the lower half of the body, Gronkowski recalled them mentioning that his "legs didn't look strong."
Of his legs, he clarifies, "They looked like Ken."
Gronkowski, though, is a good sport above all — and now, sits comfortably in knowing that the pressure has been taken off him and placed on them.
But hey, will Kick of Destiny FOMO get the best of Gronkowski and convince him to suit back up?
"If they're both missing, I might just have to show them up and then just line the ball up and give it a nice boot and then just put it right down the middle for old sakes," he jokes.
