Robbie Savage is set to come out of retirement at the age of 45.

The former Wales international signed with non-league Stockport Town, who play their games in the North West Counties Football League First Division South (the tenth tier of league football).

Savage, who managed over 600 professional appearances during his 15-year career retired in 2008, wants to combine playing with coaching in his new role.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live 606, Savage said: "It's not a PR stunt, it's me trying to help youngsters progress in the game.

"I want to try and give a bit of what I went through in my career with rejection, rehabilitation and the mental side of football.

"I am not going to run games, I will need legs around me. My son had to go out and buy me some boots today - it's a great opportunity for me."

Savage was a product of Manchester United’s famous academy system, before stints at Crewe Alexandrea, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Brighton.

Stockport Town owners also run the Pro Football Academy, which Savage helps with as he carries on studying for his Uefa B coaching licence.

Stockport’s manager Adam Jones said: “When he said he'd be interested in putting his boots on it was a no-brainer for me.”

The club currently sit in 11th with the aim of making the top four and potential promotion.
