Gardai have named the woman whose body was recovered from the River Moy in Ballina in Co Mayo. She has been named locally as Róisín Cryan, 28, from Ard Na Sí in Attyrory, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, who was the fiancée of Mayo senior footballer Conor Loftus, 29.

Mr Loftus plays for the Crossmolina side Deel Rovers and famously scored a goal in the 2017 All-Ireland football final.

Among those paying tribute were the local GAA club Shannon Gaels. They said: "On behalf of the entire Shannon Gaels GAA community, we extend our deepest condolences to the Cryan family and loved ones of Róisín.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. May you find strength and comfort in each other, and know that we stand with you in your grief."

Locals have also paid tribute. One said said: ‘’Heartfelt sympathy to Joe, Marguerite and Roisin’s sisters and to the extended Cryan and Loftus families on your great loss. Maeve and Roisin were always in and out of our house when they were children, playing with the dog and chatting to my parents, Eamonn and Bridie. With my sympathy and fond regards. Take good care of yourselves and of each other."

Another said: "I met Roisin during what turned out to be the best summer of our lives, living together in San Francisco. From the moment we met, it was clear she had a special kind of energy - gentle, kind, and full of life. We were always up to some kind of mischief together, creating memories I’ll carry with me forever. Roisin was one of the most gentle and kind-hearted people I’ve ever known, and I feel truly lucky to have shared that unforgettable summer with her. Sending condolences to her family and friends during this time. May beautiful Roisin rest in peace."

Sunday's All-Ireland Club IFC final between Crossmolina and Ballinderry was postponed with the Mayo champions saying they were "devastated at the news of the tragic incident that has occurred."

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time. We have been in contact with our members involved, and they have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this incredibly difficult time."

Ballinderry shamrocks added: "Our thoughts are with the Crossmolina community, and all impacted at this time.”

Rosin is survived by her parents Joe and Marguerite, fiancé Conor, sisters Annmarie, Clare, Ruth and Maeve. Her remains will repose at The Heritage Centre, Chapel of Rest, Church Lane in Carrick-on-Shannon tomorrow from 3pm to 7pm. Removal to St. Mary's Church will take place on Tuesday evening arriving at 6pm.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday at 11am, followed by burial in Drumlion Cemetery. The family have announced that the house is strictly private. Donations can be made to Grainne Uaille and River Moy Search and Rescue.
