Romania vs Netherlands LIVE!

Donyell Malen struck twice late on as the Netherlands reached the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Romania in Munich. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the dominant Dutch after 20 minutes but Ronald Koeman's side spurned a host of chances before finally making victory certain. Malen eased nerves with a close-range finish seven minutes from time and wrapped up a deserved success after a fine run in stoppage time.

Romania made the brighter start with Dennis Man going close but Gakpo changed the game with his third goal of the tournament. The Liverpool forward finished well as he cut inside from the left and lashed a low right-foot shot inside Florin Nita's near post.bMemphis Depay and Malen both failed to make clean contact in a goalmouth scramble and Virgil Van Dijk headed against the post.

Gakpo forced a good save from Nita and then had a close-range effort ruled out for offside before Depay went close from a free-kick and Joey Veerman missed by inches. Romania felt hard done to when play was pulled back for a foul by Denis Alibec as Nicolae Stanciu broke away but Malen finished the game with his late double. 90min: A young pitch invader as we tick towards added time. There will be four minutes of added time.

18:45 , Alex Young

85min: Weghorst is on for Gakpo.

18:43 , Alex Young

83min: Game, set and match as Malen fires home!

Stunning work from Gakpo to create the chance.

18:40 , Alex Young

79min: Another chance for Gakpo after a storming run from Malen, but his shot is blocked by Marin.

Malen’s pass could have been a little better, in truth. Made Gakpo check himself before shooting.

18:36 , Alex Young

76min: More superb defending from Dragusin, heading the ball away from Depay just yards from his own goal.

18:33 , Alex Young

73min: Veerman looks to curl one home from eight yards but his low effort bends the wrong side of the far post!

Romania pushing up the field and leaving plenty of space behind them.

18:32 , Alex Young

72min: Triple change for Romania. Marius Marin, Hagi and Dragus replaced by Cicaldau, Alibec and Mihaila.

18:29 , Alex Young

69min: Double change for the Dutch as Ake and Schouten are placed by Van de Ven and Veerman.

18:24 , Alex Young

His fourth of the tournament as he stretches to poke home from a yard out. VAR will check in...

18:22 , Alex Young

62min: Gakpo forces Nita into a full-stretch save, it seems only a matter of time until the Dutch score again.

18:18 , Alex Young

58min: Van Dijk denied by the outside of the post after a Depay corner.

So close!

18:14 , Alex Young

54min: A just do not know how Depay or Malen haven’t scored!

Dumfries cuts the ball back, Malen fluffs his shot, it rebounds to Depay who just needs to poke the ball home but a Romania defender gets a toe in the way and lets the keeper pounce on the loose ball.

18:12 , Alex Young

52min: Netherlands now back in control, sitting high up the pitch and almost inviting Romania onto them when without the ball.

18:10 , Alex Young

49min: Romania starting with an impetus just as they did in the opening stages of the first half.

Second half

18:06 , Alex Young

46min: Back underway in Munich for the second half. Bergwijn has been replaced by Malen at the break.

18:05 , Alex Young

Right, teams are back out.

18:00 , Alex Young

More needed from Depay, who has been involved as ever but not exactly the most helpful.

Simon could - and should - have doubled the Dutch advantage, but hesitated before shooting.

17:49 , Alex Young

49min: The delivery isn’t great and Netherlands clear... and there’s the whistle.

17:49 , Alex Young

48min: A late corner for Romania, last chance before the first half ends.

17:47 , Alex Young

47min: Best chance for Romania as Dragus skips along the edge of the area and fires off a shot. The space was closing so he was rushed, but a decent effort.

17:46 , Alex Young

46min: Three minutes added on.

17:45 , Alex Young

44min: Simons should make it two! He is found in acres in the area by Dumfries, takes one touch and then another, and then another and then other... and then sends a weak shot wide of the post.

More superb defending from Dragusin.

17:43 , Alex Young

42min: Depay has just sent in one of the worst corner kicks I’ve ever seen. He’s gone for goal and it’s nowhere near.

17:42 , Alex Young

40min: Netherlands really pushing for a second now. Romania are swamped.

17:39 , Alex Young

38min: Racoviţan is on.

17:38 , Alex Young

35min: Mogos is the one to make way after a nasty collision with Dumfries, hitting his ribcage and chin.

He’s sat on the bench and won’t be coming back on.

17:37 , Alex Young

34min: Looks like Romania could be making an early change.

17:32 , Alex Young

31min: Oh, wow. Depay looks certain to tap home a second goal but Dragusin slides into view and cuts out the pass.

Stunning defending.

17:29 , Alex Young

29min: Another corner for Netherlands, this time to the edge of the area, but Romania can clear.

17:27 , Alex Young

26min: De Vrij has a free header at the back post after a Depay header, but can only hit the side netting.

That was a sitter. Had to score.

17:26 , Alex Young

24min: Romania are struggling to get hold of the ball now after being relatively comfortable before the goal.

17:24 , Alex Young

22min: Romania need to respond but Netherlands already look settled,

17:21 , Alex Young

20min: Oh, that is special!

Gakpo cuts in from the left and beat Nita at his near post!

It’s against the run of play, and the keeper probably should not have been beaten.

17:18 , Alex Young

17min: End to end, this.

Couple of corner for the Dutch, the first is sent back behind and the second Ake meets but cannot direct a header on target.

17:17 , Alex Young

16min: Bergwijn now on the deck after a tough, but fair, tackle. Netherlands are in a war.

17:15 , Alex Young

15min: Another chance for Romania as Man sends a fizzing effort wide of the far post.

17:15 , Alex Young

14min: A real opening for Romania as Ratiu sends Dragus scampering into the area, but the forward couldn’t get the ball out of his feet.

17:12 , Alex Young

11min: Up the other end, Depay nips into the area and forces a great save from Nita... and then the offside flag is up.

17:12 , Alex Young

10min: Romania enjoying an extended period of possession inside the Dutch half. Everything at such a franetic pace.

17:09 , Alex Young

8min: Hagi, back on and wearing a hair net and a bandage, tries to slip in Dragus into the area but Ake mops up.

17:07 , Alex Young

6min: First attempt in anger from the Dutch as Simons stings the keeper’s palms with a fierce drive from 25 yards. It’s dipping but Nita is behind it.

17:04 , Alex Young

4min: Pause in play as Hagi is receiving treatment after that collision.

17:04 , Alex Young

3min: A fast start from Romania, who you can tell are really fired up for this. First opportunity falls to them as Hagi jumps for a cross inside the area but is beaten in teh air.

17:00 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

16:56 , Alex Young

Here they come. Depay is still wearing that headband.

16:52 , Alex Young

The players are in the tunnel.

Netherlands coach Ronaldo Koeman on Romania

16:49 , Alex Young

"It has been a very long week. We"ve certainly had enough time to review and analyse the match against Austria, and what went wrong. We didn't play compact enough, which sometimes makes it seem like you're not aggressive enough.

“Everyone knows that things can and should be done differently and now we look forward to seeing the confirmation of that [against Romania.]

"We are a proud nation. We like to win, we like to play nice football, but that doesn't always happen. We take the criticism and we'd like to turn it around tomorrow and make people happy about the final result.

"We take Romania really seriously; we know what we can expect and we need to improve compared to the last match."

Romania coach Edward Iordanescu on Netherlands

16:42 , Alex Young

"We know we have to be close to perfection to have a good result. Mentally we have to be very strong and decisive. We have to show that on the pitch. I think my team can do that. We must not make individual mistakes and be very well organised.

"Don't be fooled by how the Netherlands played against Austria. No game is easy, especially not one that can get you into the quarter-finals. The Netherlands are favourites. They have incredible players but we have our own strengths."

Denzel Dumfries and Xavi Simons return after missing the loss to Austria, while Steven Bergwijn is handed his first run-out at the tournament in place of Donyell Malan.

Dumfries is back on the right side of defence in place of Lutsharel Geertruida while Simons features in the midfield in place of Joey Veerman, who was taken off after 35 minutes of their last game against Poland.

The suspension of Romania left back Nicusor Bancu means Vasile Mogos gets his first game of the tournament.

Coach Edward Iordanescu has restored Dennis Man in a second change from the starting line-up against Slovakia as he replaces Florinel Coman.

Koeman urges Netherlands squad to use criticism as fuel

15:23 , Alex Young

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has told his players to use the criticism they have been receiving for their performances at Euro 2024 as fuel.

Koeman and his players have come under fire in the Dutch media after limping through to the last 16 by coming third in their group behind Austria and France.

They now face a showdown with Romania for a place in the quarter-finals and Koeman has backed his side to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Austria last time out.

“It was a long week, I would have preferred it to be a bit shorter,” said Koeman. “On the other hand, we had a lot of time to look back at the last match.

“We were able to analyse where things went wrong, where we were not good, where there was too little energy. We did that, the players and the staff were open about it.

Netherlands team news

14:53 , Alex Young

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman will also make changes.

The Oranje are yet to discover their best line-up at Euro 2024 and, despite finishing third in their group, expectations will be high against one of the lesser-fancied teams left in the competition.

Koeman hooked midfielder Joey Veerman during the first half of Tuesday’s defeat to Austria and his replacement, Xavi Simons, should get the nod in a central role for this game having failed to impress on the right wing earlier in the tournament.

That position could be occupied by Jeremie Frimpong, as he did in the draw with France, which would see Donyell Malen drop out.

At right-back, Denzel Dumfries is primed to return after being dropped for Lutsharel Geertruida last time out.

Memphis Depay justified his role as Netherlands’ leading man with a goal against Austria and Cody Gakpo will once again take up his position on the left wing having scored twice in Germany. Nathan Ake is set to beat Micky van de Ven to starting at left-back.

Romania team news

14:44 , Alex Young

Romania manager Edward Iordanescu will need to make changes for today's game.

Regular left-back Nicusor Bancu is suspended after picking up his second booking of Euro 2024 in the draw with Slovakia which saw the Tricolorii top Group E.

A difficult task still awaits them in the last-16 and a lack of a natural replacement means a winger such as Deian Sorescu or right-back such as Vasile Mogos will be called up as cover.

Since beating Ukraine 3-0 to start their Euros campaign, Romania have struggled for goal threat and no combination of wingers has started back-to-back games in Germany.

Ianis Hagi and Florinel Coman were selected for the Slovakia game but Parma duo Valentin Mihaila and Dennis Man are competing for recalls on Tuesday.

Iordanescu is expected to once again send his team out in a 4-3-3 formation with Tottenham’s Radu Dragusin at the back and captain Nicolae Stanciu offering the chief threat from midfield.
