Romania vs Ukraine LIVE! Euro 2024 result, match stream and latest updates today

Romania vs Ukraine - LIVE!

Romania picked up their first win at a major tournament for 24 years as they produced a superb display to beat Ukraine 3-0 in Munich. The pre-tournament verdict on Romania had been to expect cagey encounters, with only five goals conceded in qualifying but problems when it came to finding the back of the net themselves.

They did so three times in their opening Group E match at Euro 2024, taking the lead against the run of play in the first-half when Nicolae Stanciu whipped a superb first-time finish into the top corner. It had come against the run of play, Ukraine dominating possession in the early stages and Mykhailo Mudryk a real threat down the left, but that strike flipped the momentum of the match and Romania were much the better side heading into half-time. Stanciu went close to a remarkable second, as his corner was whipped in and bounced back off the bar.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin had a role to play in that opening goal, with his poor pass out leading to the Romania attack, and he was also at fault for the second after the break, letting a Razvan Marin strike from distance through his hands. And a few minutes later it was 3-0, though this time there was nothing Lunin could do. Dennis Man was allowed to stroll in the box, he rolled the ball across the face of goal and Denis Dragus was left with the simplest of finishes, as Romania secured their biggest ever European Championship win.

Goal that sealed victory...

15:58 , Matt Verri

Ukraine were struggling at 1-0, really up against it at 2-0... finished at 3-0.

Not good enough defensively this afternoon and they were ruthlessly punished.

FT: Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:53 , Matt Verri

And that’ll do it!

Romania superb, offering a real threat in attack and solid at the back. Good combination.

Ukraine made a decent start and looked to be on top, but they never recovered after falling behind.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:50 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Off the bar!

Yaremchuk in down the side, it’s a really clever effort as he loops it towards the far corner. Flicks off the top of the woodwork and over.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Just the four minutes added on.

Think Stanciu’s victory parade took five.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:47 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Couple of corners in quick succession for Ukraine. Goal difference will be crucial if they need to rely on being one of the best third-placed teams to qualify, any boost here could be vital.

Mudryk with a terrible delivery though - not sure how he’s still taking these.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:45 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Stanciu replaced, though not before he turns to face every single Romanian fan individually and clap them. Fair enough, deserves to milk it after that goal.

Racovitan on for the closing stages.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:42 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Pace of the match has slowed right down, both sides know this is pretty much done.

Would have been plenty expecting Romania not to score three goals in the entire tournament, let alone their opening match.

Ukraine with another chance to get one of their own, but Mudryk blasts high and wide from a tight angle.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:38 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Marin into the book, bit of a swinging arm on Mudryk.

The Chelsea man takes the free-kick himself, and guess what? Dragusin there again, first to get his head on the ball.

He has been so, so impressive.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:35 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Ukraine are having probably their best spell of the match, Yarmolenko has had a positive impact.

He plays the ball inside to Sudakov, gets the shot away from 25 yards out. Good save.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:31 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Yarmolenko free on the right, dangerous ball into the six-yard box but Dragusin is there again. Turned behind for a corner and celebrates it like a goal.

Brief delay, pitch invader has made his way on. Not sure it was really worth the effort.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:28 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Mudryk brought down, free-kick Ukraine. 25 yards out. Now would be a good time for Sudakov to whip one into the top corner.

It is Sudakov... it is not into the top corner. Off Dragusin in the wall and behind.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:26 , Matt Verri

67 mins: First yellow card of the match, Konoplia can’t really complain.

Apparently he can. Either way, free-kick Romania in a decent position on the left wing.

Whipped in, straight into the side-netting and plenty inside the Allianz think it’s in.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk and Brazhko all on for Ukraine.

It’s going to have to be something very special from Ukraine in these final 30 minutes or so. Wouldn’t bank it, the way this is going.

Saying that, ball drops for Yarmolenko in the box and he blasts over.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

15:18 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Nasty one for Dragus.

He tries to quickly change direction, foot gets stuck and he twists awkwardly. Going to be fine to continue, but that could have been bad.

GOAL! Romania 3-0 Ukraine | Denis Dragus 57'

15:16 , Matt Verri

ROMANIA MAKE IT THREE!

Man strolls into the box from a short corner, rolls the ball across the face of goal and Dragus can’t miss!

VAR check... goal stands.

Romania 2-0 Ukraine

15:14 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Ukraine are falling apart, it’s one-way traffic.

Mudryk loses it, Romania back on the attack and Stanciu’s effort is blocked, before Lunin is forced into a sharp save.

Corner.

GOAL! Romania 2-0 Ukraine | Razvan Marin 53'

15:11 , Matt Verri

IT’S TWO!

And Lunin has had a bit of a shocker again.

Romania break, Ukraine seem to have got it under control as the ball falls to Marin.

He’s 25 yards out, decent strike and it squirms under Lunin. Has to save that.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

15:10 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Ukraine can counter, they’ve got a two-on-two after winning it back on the halfway line.

Sudakov keeps going and going and going, then backwards, sideways, backwards.... not really the most direct route.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

15:06 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Mudryk is Ukraine’s best hope of making something happen.

Again he bursts into space down the left, gets to the byline and stands up a cross. Can’t quite pick out Dovbyk.

Back underway!

15:04 , Matt Verri

Up and running at the start of the second-half!

Some finish!

14:50 , Matt Verri

Big mistake from Lunin, obviously, but Romania still had a lot to do.

Stanciu whipped it first-time into the top corner, caught it so sweetly.

HT: Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:48 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time.

Nicolae Stanciu’s brilliant finish the difference at the break, with that goal coming against the run of play.

Romania much better after taking the lead and very nearly had a second, when Stanciu’s corner smacked off the bar.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Clash of heads brings a halt in play, but we’re swiftly back up and running.

Two minutes added on, Ukraine could do with half-time. Haven’t responded particularly well to falling behind.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Dovbyk briefly thinks he has been played in by Mudryk, but two shoves from Burca later and the chance has gone.

Dragusin and Ratiu swiftly on the scene to celebrate that, much to Dovbyk’s irritation.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: It’s becoming increasingly stretched, really good game now. Marin inside onto his left foot, shot takes a slight deflection and spins wide. Corner for Romania.

Whipped in, Lunin flaps at thin air and it very nearly finds the far corner - off the bar!

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Mudryk gets Ukraine back on the attack, flashes a ball across the face of goal and Dragusin very nearly heads it into his own net. Just about over the bar.

Mudryk’s volley comes to nothing, Romania look to break. Ratiu leads the break, but it breaks down.

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Cheap free-kick won out wide, Dragus only too happy to go down. Up come the defenders.

It’s a great ball in, headed behind and it will be a corner. Romania firmly on top now, attacking the end where their fans are.

Taken short and they make a mess of it. I need to see some stats on the success rates of short corners...

Romania 1-0 Ukraine

14:32 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Very different feel to the match now, Romanian fans making all the noise. Ruthless from their side, Ukraine punished for their first mistake.

It was difficult to break Romania down before - it’s not about to get any easier.

GOAL! Romania 1-0 Ukraine | Nicolae Stanciu 29'

14:30 , Matt Verri

STUNNING!

Wow. Lunin plays a terrible ball out and Romania are on the attack.

Comes to Stanciu, and he fires a sensational first-time finish into the top corner.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:28 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Better from Romania, sharp counter down their right and they win a corner. Their first of the match and it’s got the fans going again.

Ukraine hack it away though, job done.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Another Ukraine corner, the pressure is starting to build.

Or not. It barely reaches the first man, let alone beats him. Woeful.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Dangerous ball whipped in, Burca can only slice it over his own bar. Corner Ukraine.

Initially cleared, comes back to Dovbyk though and he smashes an effort over from 20 yards.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:20 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Long spells of possession from Ukraine, met with a wall of ten yellow shirts. No space at all.

Romania haven’t got going in attack, but they are looking really solid at the back. Can see how they only conceded five goals in qualifying.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:18 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Sudakov slips, gets up, loses his balance again and then clatters into Marin.

Not the best few seconds you’ll ever see.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Romania have had a couple of tries at running straight at Zinchenko, but he’s been up to the task so far.

Normally plays in midfield for his country, of course, but no shortage of experience at left-back.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:12 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Dovbyk looks to be free on the edge of the area, dangerous moment but the ball is poked away from him.

Here come Ukraine again, Mudryk back to Sudakov and his effort is charged down. Romania can’t get out.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Ukraine continue to dominate the ball, but Romania are solid in their shape.

Zinchenko clips a ball down the line, Dragusin alert to the danger and knocks it out of play with Mudryk lurking. Match has settled down now, pace has dropped off.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: First Romania attack, after Zabarnyi got clattered in the build-up. Not sure how that wasn’t given as a foul.

Played waved on, comes to Coman and he fires straight at the goalkeeper from distance.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:07 , Matt Verri

6 mins: It’s all Ukraine in the early stages, Romania struggling to get out.

Unsurprisingly, the focus is down the left, with Zinchenko and Mudryk. Just need a bit more patient, have been too keen to go over the top too quickly.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: First sign of Dovbyk getting involved, makes a nice run in behind.

Ball clipped over the top, Dobvyk in if he can take it down but his touch bobbles through to the goalkeeper.

It’s a pretty high line from Romania.

Romania 0-0 Ukraine

14:02 , Matt Verri

1 min: Well Ukraine have come flying out of the blocks.

Mudryk played in out wide, drifts inside onto his right foot, past a couple of challenges but can’t quite find room for the shot on the edge of the area.

KICK-OFF!

14:00 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running Group E!

13:58 , Matt Verri

There are a LOT of Romanian fans inside the Allianz, judging by the anthems.

No appearances at the World Cup since 1998. No European Championship wins since 2000.

Been a while since they’ve celebrated on the biggest stage!

Here we go!

13:56 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch in Munich.

Ukraine squad line up for the anthems, each with a flag draped over them.

Sea of yellow in the stands, but will be Ukraine wearing blue this afternoon.

Powerful message from Shevchenko

13:51 , Matt Verri

Andriy Shevchenko addressed fans and the media in Munich this morning.

He stood in front of a section of stand from a stadium in Kharkiv, which was destroyed by Russian troops during the invasion

Rebrov on importance of Ukraine 'spirit'

13:40 , Matt Verri

Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has previously spoken about the importance of giving Ukrainians at home something to cheer, and it will be a similar story on the football pitch in Germany.

Ukraine manager Serhiy Rebrov wants the team to represent their country by showing their “spirit” at Euro 2024.

"All the players, me personally, are getting lots of messages from our fighters, from our soldiers, from our friends who are now fighting for the freedom of Ukraine," said Rebrov.

"I am sure they are very proud of us; we are very proud of them. They are saying, when you are here 'show the spirit of Ukraine'. This tournament is really about the spirit of our country."

Iordanescu: Romania ready for anything

13:30 , Matt Verri

Edward Iordanescu has urged his Romania side to rise to the occasion this afternoon, as they attempt to win their first match at a major tournament since Euro 2000.

“This is what we wanted - to be at the Euros,” Iordanescu said.

“We have created this opportunity and we are ready to give our best. We want to stay here as long as possible, so we will fight for our chance. I promise the fans, and I say this very sincerely: this team will give their best on the pitch.

“As for the match against Ukraine, we are ready for all scenarios.”

Would be a bit of a concern if that wasn’t the case.

Stage is set!

13:25 , Matt Verri

Fan of unnecessary camera angles of an empty stadium?

Good news.

This was taken a bit earlier - can assure you there are actually fans inside now.

Ukraine forced to change plans

13:11 , Matt Verri

Everton left-back Mykolenko only fit enough for the bench, so Zinchenko starts there for Ukraine.

He is normally used in midfield for his country, but he has plenty of experience playing at left-back for Arsenal and Man City, so should be no issues there.

Dovbyk leads the line after a superb goalscoring season.

No goalless draws so far

12:57 , Matt Verri

It’s been a pretty entertaining start to Euro 2024.

Plenty of goals, at least until England’s 1-0 win over Serbia last night.

We haven’t yet had our first goalless draw. Don’t want to panic anyone, but if ever a game felt like a potential contender for that crown...

How Romania qualified...

12:42 , Matt Verri

No such stress for Romania.

Ten matches, six wins, four draws. Those of you who are good at maths can work out there were no defeats.

Just five goals conceded in qualifying, in a group with the likes of Switzerland and Israel. Impressive effort.

How Ukraine qualified...

12:28 , Matt Verri

It was a nervy affair!

Ukraine faced Iceland in a play-off final, with a place at Euro 2024 on the line.

Iceland led at the break, but the second-half charge came and Mykhailo Mudryk’s late winner secured his country’s place in Germany.

Stage is set!

12:19 , Matt Verri

Allianz Arena once again hosting some Euro 2024 action this afternoon.

Germany beat Scotland 5-1 here on Friday night.

Six goals in this match this afternoon? Where do I sign...

Standard Sport prediction

12:09 , Matt Verri

Romania aren’t to be overlooked, as Switzerland found out during qualifying.

But Ukraine look to have that extra bit of quality, particulary in attack, and can edge a tight encounter.

Ukraine to win, 1-0.

Ukraine team news

11:59 , Matt Verri

Ukraine hope to be injury-free for this afternoon’s opener.

Despite struggling in qualifying, Ukraine’s squad has real talent and will be expected to qualify from Group E. Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin spent much of the season filling in capably for the injured Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid, while Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mykhailo Mudyrk get regular game time at Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

Mudryk should start on the wing with Artem Dovbyk competing against Roman Yaremchuk to be the central striker after a fine season with Girona.

Manager Rebrov has calmed fears over an injury to Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko, who would be replaced at left-back by Zinchenko if he misses out.

Predicted Ukraine XI: Lunin; Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Mykolenko; Stepanenko, Sudakov, Zinchenko; Tsygankov, Yaremchuk, Mudryk

Romania team news

11:49 , Matt Verri

Romania’s team has fewer star names than Ukraine, aside from perhaps Tottenham’s centre-back Radu Dragusin and veteran forward Nicolae Stanciu, but they’re well-organised by manager Edward Iordanescu and could cause a surprise in Germany.

Denis Dragus and George Puscas, once of Reading, are competing to start in place of the absent veteran striker Denis Alibec.

Atletico Madrid’s Horatiu Moldovan should edge veteran Florin Nita to start in goal.

Predicted Romania XI: Moldovan; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; M. Marin, R. Marin, Cicaldau; Stancu, Puscas, Man
