Rotherham United boss Steve Evans has his say on links with Wanderers job
STEVE Evans has distanced himself from rumours that he is being considered for the Bolton Wanderers job.
The Scot, currently in charge of Rotherham United, has an affinity with Bolton stretching back to his playing days as a trainee in the late seventies.
Some reports have linked with him with the vacant post at the Toughsheet but Evans has clarified his situation in the Rotherham press.
“I've not had any contact from Bolton,” he told the Advertiser. “I got a call from the people who look after me on the business side just to see if there would be any interest on my behalf.
“I love that club. I started there as an apprentice looking after the Sam Allardyces, Frank Worthingtons and Peter Reids. I've got a lot of affinity with the club. Every time I go there I see people who I remember and who remember me. It's a brilliant club.
“I know one of two of the senior people there as well. But my only task is making Rotherham United better.
“I was very fortunate that my chairman and vice-chairman stood shoulder to shoulder with me in a little spell that was difficult for everyone.
“They showed me tremendous loyalty and the least I can do is return that loyalty.”
Wanderers are in the process of establishing a shortlist of names with recruitment chief Chris Markham taking a lead role in the search. Ludonautics, the data firm which have established an official relationship with the club and are run by ex-Liverpool FC director of research, Ian Graham, are also giving advice on the potential candidates.
Ex-Plymouth and Stoke boss Steven Schumacher and former Oxford United manager Des Buckingham remain the bookmakers’ favourites at this time, although the club have not closed the door on any avenue at this stage and could consider options in-work, or based outside the UK.
Julian Darby, Andy Taylor and Andy Tutte have been promoted as an interim management team for Saturday’s game against Huddersfield Town and could well be utilised the following Tuesday for the visit of Kevin Nolan’s Northampton Town.
