Roy Keane has once again taken aim at Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming the Liverpool vice-captain looks like he has “never played at right-back”.

The former Manchester United captain has been a regular critic of Alexander-Arnold since he made his breakthrough at Anfield. Keane has rarely missed an opportunity to attack the 26-year-old for his defensive capabilities - even when it hasn’t been up for discussion.

Alexander-Arnold’s defending has come under the microscope recently, with his performance during the 2-2 draw with Keane’s former side at Anfield earlier this month being slammed by Liverpool fans and other supporters alike. Keane even went as far as to suggest the academy graduate wouldn’t be able earn a move to Tranmere Rovers, never mind Real Madrid.

Speculation is growing that Alexander-Arnold may be heading to the Bernabeu soon, with Real having stepped up its attempts to try and sign him this month. Although Spanish outlet Relevo has suggested that they might now be resigned to missing out on his signature in January, they will still be able to lay the groundwork for a free transfer during the summer, with the right-back able to speak to foreign clubs now.

Giving his verdict on Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to the Spanish capital, Keane delivered one of his usual withering putdowns of the Liverpool star.

“If Trent Alexander-Arnold goes to Real Madrid, then good luck to him – as if Madrid don’t know how to defend,” Keane told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“He’s played over 300 games and played for England, but he still defends like he has never played at right-back. He’s played all these games, and he must do training sessions, but he’s playing right-back, and people go at him like he’s confused and never seen something like that before.

“Trent defends as if Liverpool have had lots of injuries, and they’ve asked him to just fill in a position.”

Liverpool.com says: It’s been at least a week since Keane last had a go at Alexander-Arnold, so we were about due for another of his tedious digs. Yes, his defending has not been great of late, but Keane just seems to have some weird obsession with the Liverpool vice-captain at this point. How on earth is he going to crowbar in his disdain every week if Alexander-Arnold does indeed make the move to Spain?
