Diogo Dalot was probably a relieved man when Manchester United signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Dalot has predominantly played as a left wing-back since Ruben Amorim's appointment and the arrival of Dorgu suggested he would relocate to the right, where he is most comfortable.

Considering Dalot has struggled on that side and his form has suffered, it felt like a no-brainer to start Dorgu as the left wing-back against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round.

But Amorim disagreed and Dalot started on the left. Dorgu played as the right-wing back and made a good first impression, although he was replaced at the interval by Alejandro Garnacho, who ultimately changed the game and contributed to Joshua Zirkzee's equalising goal.

During his post-match press conference, Amorim was asked about starting Dorgu on the right and explained: "He played a lot of time at Lecce on the right and the left. That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to a lot, to have a player like him. He was a little bit anxious with first touch of the ball. It’s a different league for him, different speed of the game, but he did well.

"He had pace, strength, he will improve a lot and we as a team need to play better to help these new guys to perform at the right level. The position, you can see in WyScout he can play both sides."

Amorim was correct about Dorgu, who is versatile and played on the right for Lecce, but highlighting his versatility ignores the fact Dalot has underperformed on the left, which is why everybody expected Dorgu to be parachuted into that role on his debut at Old Trafford.

It's all well and good pointing out that Dorgu can play on the right, but Dalot has been screaming to move from the left and signing Dorgu from Lecce was the obvious solution to the problem.

Dorgu won each of his aerial duels, he had 47 touches of the ball and made seven defensive actions. Having said that, Dalot continued to be sketchy - he did improve in the second half - and supporters left Old Trafford wondering why Amorim had overcomplicated his team selection.

Amorim's selection was questioned.

There was also some confusion at why Amorim had asked Dorgu and Dalot to drift inside into the centre of the pitch. "Inverted wing-backs… you saw it at OT first," wrote Paul Scholes on Instagram.

Roy Keane was working as a pundit for ITV and also questioned Amorim, saying: "There is a lack of belief, lack of confidence. They've brought new players in, you're thinking he's [Dorgu] going to play in his position and he's playing right wing-back. You think, is that unfair on players?

"And you look at the urgency for the goal, it's given away cheaply, people not staying with their runners. I just look at it from United's point of view and think, my goodness, what it's come to?"

Amorim has been bullet proof since he joined from Sporting Lisbon in November. After all, he is operating with square pegs in round holes and he inherited a poor squad whose confidence had been shattered, but he does make the occasional decision that doesn't make much sense.

It's better for Amorim to learn now because this season is a write off, but United still need results and starting Dorgu and Dalot in those roles against Leicester was counter-productive.

United should have backed Amorim with a striker in January and the 40-year-old took on an impossible task this season. However, his decisions can still be questioned and he certainly didn't help himself by not playing a new signing in the position that made the most sense.

Before you take to the comment section, this article isn't the start of 'an agenda against Amorim' or 'a hack turning on the manager already'. Every level-headed observer questioned Amorim's team selection on Friday and it's acceptable to pick out something United's head coach got wrong.

Hopefully Amorim concedes he made a mistake by starting Dorgu on the left against Tottenham.
