When Amad swept home the equaliser at Anfield on Sunday, he bolstered the idea that his £19million move from Atalanta four years ago this week is becoming to appear as somewhat of a bargain buy.

In netting the second goal of United’s impressive away performance at their fierce rivals, he became the first United player to score away at Manchester City and Liverpool in the same season since Robin van Persie in the 2012/13 campaign.

When the now 22-year-old Ivorian winger arrived at Old Trafford for a fee that was reportedly worth up to £37million in total, eyebrows were raised as he had only made five senior appearances prior to his switch to England.

Despite his lack of pedigree at senior level, he had 61 goal involvements in 93 appearances for the respective Atalanta youth teams, causing a buzz of excitement at his potential as a future talent below the surface level discussion about his price tag.

After a difficult first 18 months in the UK, a period which included a loan move to Scottish giants Rangers, Amad found great form whilst on loan in the Championship at Sunderland.

In his time on Wearside he became a fan favourite, scoring 14 goals as Sunderland reached the play-offs, many of which fit into the ‘spectacular’ category as he fired in from 20 plus yards on multiple occasions.

An injury picked up after his stint at the Black Cats scuppered a potential loan move to Feyenoord leaving him to be included in Erik Ten Hag’s squad for the upcoming season.

In a campaign bereft of playing time under the Dutchman, Amad seized his moment where possible. His extra time winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter final cemented his place in United folklore, leaving supporters craving for his talents to be called upon more in the coming games.

After picking up an FA Cup winners medal, the start 2024/25 season saw Amad’s game time remain low under Ten Hag which was surprising given that his evident amount of talent would have been greatly appreciated due to United’s struggle to create chances prior to the Dutch manager’s sacking.

Ten Hag’s departure has appeared to have become somewhat of a sliding doors moment for Amad as he immediately shone under interim boss Ruud Van Nistelrooy, scoring twice in a 2-0 victory against PAOK in the Europa league.

However, it has been under the guidance of Ruben Amorim that Amad has truly shown what he is capable of in a United shirt.

Whether operating as a wing-back or in a more advanced attacking role, the Ivorian has often been the finest player on the pitch since the Portuguese took the helm, providing a player of the match performance against Everton which saw his relentless energy pay off in the form of two assists.

A few weeks later when United faced City at the Etihad, Amad provided a sublime piece of control and subsequent finish to complete a stunning late comeback in the Manchester Derby.

Aside from the moments against United’s two main rivals, Amad’s numbers for the season are impressive with him having 13 goals and assists in 28 appearances this campaign, a stat boosted by the fact that only 18 appearances were starts.

In a time that has seen United pay extortionate fees for players who have produced less than Amad has in six weeks of consistent minutes, it is becoming more plain to see that his signing may have been one of the very few masterstrokes in the post-Ferguson era.
