Ruben Amorim issues Lisandro Martinez injury update as Man Utd star stretchered off in tears
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has given an update after Lisandro Martinez was stretchered off in tears during the Red Devils' defeat to Crystal Palace.
The Argentine United defender instantly called for a substitution after jarring his left knee in the turf during a challenge with Ismalia Sarr and had his head in his hands as he lay prone on the pitch, with medics tending to him for more than five minutes the Daily Mirror reports. The 27-year-old was seen crying on the stretcher as he was carried off, with Matthijs de Ligt coming on to replace him. It came after a ball had been played down the touchline on United's left hand side in the 77th minute, with Martinez covering.
But as he tried to shield the ball, the defender crumpled to the floor, with referee John Brooks quickly awarding United a free-kick. And in concerning scenes, Martinez did not get back to his feet, instead staying on the ground for more than five minutes of treatment. A bad afternoon for United got even worse soon after as Jean-Phillipe Mateta netted his second of the game for the visitors - consigning under-fire boss Ruben Amorim to an eighth defeat in his 19 games in charge as they slumped to 13th in the Premier League table.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live after the game, boss Amorim said: "I think it is a serious situation, although we will see in the next few days. I think it is a bad situation for us, and especially for Licha.
"It was hard on us, the result. We improved some things from the last two games - even the ones we won against Southampton and Fulham. We created situations but we suffered two goals that we can avoid, but tomorrow we start preparing for the next game."
Martinez joined United from Ajax in 2022 for a fee of £47m and has gone on to play 90 games across his three seasons at Old Trafford. But he has struggled with injury in recent times, missing 42 matches due to a mixture of knee, foot and calf issues.
