After making his Manchester United debut from the right against Leicester City in the FA Cup earlier this month, Patrick Dorgu started Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the left.

The Dane moved to Old Trafford from Italian outfit Lecce just over a fortnight ago after United had prioritised the signing of a left-sided wing-back in the January transfer window. Dorgu is considered as one of the most exciting players in his position, and his addition to the squad was well received.

However, head coach Ruben Amorim surprised almost everyone when Dorgu made his United bow from the right in the 2-1 win over Leicester. He started at right wing-back, with Diogo Dalot continuing on the opposite flank, despite his recent struggles.

Amorim was quizzed about his decision to start the 20-year-old on the right flank and he pointed out the fact he had often operated on that side of the pitch in Italy, suggesting anyone questioning his thinking should turn to WyScout.

The United head coach said: "He played a lot of time at Lecce on the right and the left. That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to a lot, to have a player like him.

"He was a little bit anxious with first touch of the ball. It's a different league for him, different speed of the game, but he did well. He had pace, strength, he will improve a lot and we as a team need to play better to help these new guys to perform at the right level.

"The position, you can see in WyScout he can play both sides."

Prior to joining United in the mid-season window, Dorgu had played ten times as a right-winger for Lecce this season, highlighting that Amorim was within his rights to award him his Reds debut from that flank. However, it is understood the long-term plan is for Dorgu to cement his place in the United XI on the left.

He was one of United's best players against Spurs from the left wing-back berth, regularly producing enterprising attacking runs that often went unnoticed by Alejandro Garnacho. His performance was an indicator that could become his long-term position.

Ahead of the defeat to Spurs, Dorgu was asked which position he considers his strongest and admitted he is comfortable operating on either flank, backing up Amorim's decision to deploy him on the right against Leicester just over a week ago.

"I don't really mind, I can play both sides," Dorgu told beIN Sports. "I have played a lot on the right for my old team and I played on the left also. So I'm comfortable in both positions."

To Dorgu's credit, he did not look out of place on the right in the first half against Leicester. He was a rare bright spark in a forgettable team showing, often galloping forward down the right and attempting to link up with Amad.

In Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, the wing-backs are essential, meaning the onus is often on them to make the whole team tick. Dorgu, despite his youthfulness, is considered as one of the best up-and-coming wing-backs in the business.

Both capable and happy to play on either flank, he will be a useful operator for United. Amorim's decision to give him a chance on both flanks in his first two appearances is already looking like a wise move.
