Ruben Amorim reveals 'really strange' Rangers similarity didn't spook him before Man Utd winner
Ruben Amorim insists he was not out for revenge against Rangers.
The Manchester United boss came up against the Ibrox team during his spell in charge of Braga. The back-to-back defeats against Steven Gerrard’s outfit in 2020 were the only European losses he suffered during his time in charge of the Portuguese side. But he had blanked those set-backs from his mind as he prepared the Red Devils team to take on Philippe Clement’s Light Blues. He said: “It was a long time ago, it was really strange in that the two matches we were winning, the first one 2-0 and then Gerrard and his team changed the things. No I was not thinking about that, it was just a victory that we truly needed in this moment.”
Amorim was pulling no punches this week as he admitted his side were “maybe the worst in United history”. They’ve sunk to 13th in the Premier League after a woeful run of results that has saw them lose four of their last five games at home heading into the Gers showdown.
But they got back on track as Bruno Fernandes fired home a stoppage-time winner just seconds after Cyriel Dessers looked to have given Rangers a precious point at the Theatre of Dreams. "We didn't deserve that, to be drawing at the moment,” said Amorim. “But then I think it was fair for us to win again, a game that we already know was tough. We started well, I think the pace of the game helped us.
“We tried to do things, we were better with the ball, sometimes we controlled well in the beginning, and then we lost the control for seven minutes because of some bad passes in some positions. But then I think we created the best chances to win the game.”
Gers rode their luck before the break when a Matthijs de Ligt goal was chalked off for a foul on Robin Propper. And the United boss reckoned: “If it was Premier League it would be different, but we have to accept that.
“The best thing is that we did it again in the second half, we are improving set-pieces, we have an intensive course here in the Premier League with set-pieces. We can use it in Europe, sometimes the movement is a little bit different, in the Premier League you can move a little bit more to score a goal, but in that aspect it was a good performance.”
