The January transfer window is fast approaching its conclusion and the future of Marcus Rashford at Manchester United remains uncertain.

Since announcing to the world that he was open to exploring new options away from Old Trafford, Rashford has been shunned from Amorim's plans. In fairness, that shunning had already begun a few days prior when the winger was left out, alongside Alejandro Garnacho, for the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

However, while Garnacho returned to the team the following Thursday for the Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Rashford remained out of the squad. He briefly returned in the last game of 2024 but was given a watching brief from the bench as Newcastle waltzed to victory.

Illness kept him out of the Liverpool game and could have affected his position for the Arsenal FA Cup tie. But Rashford remained conspicuous by his absence for the Southampton and Brighton matches.

Following his interview in December, the narrative surrounding Rashford has been one of him wanting out. That has been an agenda of his own creation, thanks to his words to Henry Winter, but the academy alumni may be rowing back on that now.

On Wednesday, Rashford was in training at Carrington as United prepared for the Rangers test. But yet, Amorim chose to stand firm and not include him in the Reds' team to face their Glasgow opponents.

Nevertheless, Rashford was in attendance at Old Trafford for the Europa League game and even sent a message to his teammates on social media wishing them well. Perhaps this is a subtle plea from Rashford to be included once more in the United plans.

There must be a reason why Rashford is being overlooked while Garnacho has been reintegrated. The most likely explanation is that Amorim remains doubtful about Rashford's commitment to the cause.

MEN Sport understands that Garnacho is not actively seeking a move whereas Rashford has already admitted he is considering it. But, the 27-year-old's decision to openly show his support for his teammates was clearly a message to both his manager and the fans that his heart is still with United.

The question is, is it too little, too late?
