Ruben Amorim told to 'make peace' with Marcus Rashford after Man United's defeat to Bournemouth
Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth in their final Premier League match before Christmas, held at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were left reeling as Dean Huijsen's header gave the visitors an early lead, capitalising on yet another set piece conceded by United. United fans have been giving their opinions in our comments section.
The situation worsened in the second half when Noussair Mazraoui committed a late foul on Justin Kluivert, resulting in a penalty which the Cherries forward successfully converted to double Bournemouth's lead. Antoine Semenyo added insult to injury with a third goal just three minutes later.
This makes it seven goals that United have conceded from set-pieces in their last six games, while they have shipped 17 goals in the Premier League in 2024 from set-pieces, a calendar year record in the competition.

Readers have been pointing the finger for another stinging loss this season. Commenter Philantro says: “I recommend Amorim to stop rotating the players so many times during the game, now when they don't even know their initial roles.
"Fernandes, Dalot and Mazraoui all looked confused when their positions changed. At the moment, the current players can't even score from six-yards, so we need Amorim to make peace with Marcus [Rashford] who can score anywhere within 25-yards from goal. Marcus scored two goals in his last Premier League start. Amorim and Marcus both need to compromise to come to some middle ground solution.”
Derrie agrees: “There's no doubt the manager needs time, but he could help himself by not playing players out of their normal positions. Garnacho and Martínez have gone backwards since the change of manager. Dalot and Malacia are not good enough and then you have Antony, Rashford, Mount and Shaw. Sadly, we don't have a decent centre forward.”
MIA72 adds: “I think we've just about had enough of the coach's chopping and changing. Zirkzee should not start another match as long as Hojlund is fit. And Mainoo should not play before Casemiro. This is extremely frustrating.”
Spiritoflakotasioux believes: “Apart from Maguire not one of our first team squad can head a ball, none have the spring to get up and hang in the air like Dennis Law, Joe Jordan, Frank Stapleton, Robbo, and even Lou Macari could. This is costing us at both ends of the pitch. Is it lack of bravery or lack of know-how?
"This skill needs to be incorporated into United's training programme so by next season we are on it! Bring in a heading coach, Joe Jordan and Frank Stapleton maybe? We are improving under Amorim. We are playing with purpose, we just need to cut out the individual mistakes.”
Davidantonythomas86 thinks: “Bruno Fernandes needs to be dropped from set pieces. For weeks and weeks his corners haven't made it past the first defender and/or post and his free-kicks have gone straight into the wall. We're too slow in transition and not clinical enough. So many shots around 18-yards being blasted over or not hitting the target.”
LesJohnsonsays: “Bournemouth deserved their win, we deserved absolutely nothing! We go from beating City and lose two on the bounce, it was awful to watch, and what is the point of topping City when we blow it against Bournemouth?
"I understand that Amorim has taken on a mountain and has attempted to plaster over the wounds, but sooner or later he has to turn it around because our players, apart from one or two, are just not good enough.”
Time for Change agrees: “Amorim talks the talk but his team is a sloppy mess and he is, as he admits, 100% responsible. The lazy decision to shoot from distance, rather than working the ball in close, is a very frustrating conscious decision.
"The midfield play is slow, laboured and lacking in creativity. Mass changes to the starting eleven game to game is also not helping, he must know his starting eleven by now. Amorim can’t expect much help with incoming transfers in January unless Rashford and Zirkzee can be shifted to raise funds.”
Saihulud adds: “Today's defeat is mostly on Amorim starting players like Malacia, Maguire and Onana and letting Bruno and Dalot continue even though they were out of their depth. The most shocking however, was the subbing of Ugarte which led to Bournemouth overwhelming Man United's midfield after he was gone."
Floatin thinks: “Whatever else happens, we simply must buy a decent left-back in January. Malacia is not good enough and Shaw is just too injury prone. Our defence is way too small and we will continue to leak goals from set pieces. Yoro now needs a run of games. Zirkzee looks like he'll be nothing more than an impact sub and he should be sold while there's still a bid for him from Italy.”
Sclarkidmt points out: “They are fine in the middle third and that is about it. Defenders cannot read movement at all. How many shots outside the box do you actually expect to be successful? Shoot over the ball and not leaning back. Set-piece defending is marginal at best. You cannot win when only half of the team puts in any effort consistently. I would rather the oldest youth team go in, because you would at least see more effort. Basics and effort are needed from the senior team at some point. More losses than wins now.”
Bluecheetahs is slightly more positive: “It just wasn't our day today. Onwards! As Jimmy Greaves used to say ‘football is a funny old game’. Forest are fourth and City are seventh!”
