It was Claudio Ranieri who was first labelled as 'The Tinkerman' for his constant changes while in charge of Chelsea. Ruben Amorim is bringing the phrase back into fashion.

The Manchester United boss made six changes for matches two and three of his reign before limiting it to four for the visit of Nottingham Forest on Saturday night.

Some of the changes over the last month were forced, with suspension and injury hampering his ability to field a consistent side, while Amorim's dissatisfaction at United's fitness levels has also played a part. There's an element of casting an eye over as many players as possible too in the search for the first choice XI.

Plenty of questions remain as to who slots in where in Amorim's favoured 3-4-3 shape with perhaps the side that started against Forest the closest so far to a long-term possibility, even if that didn't include Marcus Rashford or Mazrouri and even allowing for the defeat.

Amorim will want to settle on a settled line-up sooner rather than later to help United climb the table. We are now five games into his tenure and three players look nailed on for a place in it.

Andre Onana, Matthijs De Ligt and Bruno Fernandes are the only three players to have started every match of the Amorim era and that trio look likely to form the spine of the side through goalkeeper, central man of a back three and the midfield skipper.

The remaining eight spots are arguably still up for grabs even if some players are more firmly pencilled in than others. Lisandro Martinez has been hampered by injury and suspension but looks a certain starter when fit, while Leny Yoro will have designs on the other defensive berth.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte looks like the long-term first choice midfield pairing but the Forest clash was just their second top flight start together, and both have been defeats. Diogo Dalot, Mazrouri and Amad Diallo and could all lay claim to the wing back positions based on the early evidence, with the latter playing himself into a regular role. While up front Rasmus Hojlund, Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee would all like to be first choice.

While Amorim continues to tinker in search of his United utopia, just three players seem inked in and immune from rotation. There's work to do.
