Ruben Amorim's 'red flag' from day one at Man United is still prevalent months on
Ruben Amorim has made a disappointing start at Manchester United, failing to kick the team out of first gear.
The club were 13th in the Premier League when he took over three months ago, now they're 15th and staring down the barrel of their worst domestic performance in over 50 years. It's perhaps no surprise given how disorganised United have looked in recent weeks - something Gary Neville highlighted after his former side's 1-0 defeat by Tottenham on Sunday.
"The structure of the team is awful," the ex-Red Devils defender blasted on Sky Sports. "The gaps in that midfield, that's a tactical thing – they've been told to do that. Bruno Fernandes is playing right wing. It's embarrassing. You wouldn't see this in U9s or U10s football."

A lack of on-field organisation has been a problem all season and one that Amorim has evidently been struggling to solve. After the Portuguese coach's first game in charge against Ipswich in November, Neville said that the team's lack of structure was a big concern.
"I mean, the red flags that were there have probably been there in the last few months and the last season and a half," he said. "It's a team that is very difficult to actually like watching.
"You watch them play in the new system, and you look at Ipswich, who are very near the bottom of the league, they [Ipswich] looked more organised, [and looked like they had a] better coach. They looked like they had more appetite for the game and more enthusiasm.
"And that's a constant, and it has been a constant for the last year-and-a-half, two years, three years. So we've got a situation where these group of players, to be honest with you, have created a pattern for themselves and become what they are."
Despite beating Manchester City in the league and knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup, there's been little cause for celebration since Amorim arrived. United have suffered nine defeats in all competitions since the start of December and are now just three places above the relegation zone.
The transition to Amorim's preferred 3-4-3 system has been slow and unconvincing, with several players looking like square pegs in round holes. Left wing-back Patrick Dorgu was the club's only notable addition in January, leaving Amorim with little more than the tools Erik ten Hag left him to drag the team out of the mire.
Next for United is a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday. After that, they welcome Ipswich to Old Trafford on Wednesday, before an FA Cup fifth-round home clash with Fulham the following Sunday.
