Ruben Selles will have spent much of the week mulling over what could be seen as a potentially major decision ahead of Hull City's trip to Millwall on Saturday.

And that surrounds what he does in between the posts. Does he stick with Ivor Pandur, or make a change and give Carl Rushworth his first Championship appearance of the season, a decision which is always viewed as a big one?

Pandur has endured something of a controversial 12 months at the MKM Stadium, following his arrival from Fortuna Sittard last January, while Rushworth's spell in East Yorkshire has largely been a disaster given he didn't play following his deadline day arrival in the summer, before picking up an ankle injury the day before he was set to make his debut against Sunderland back in October.

Rushworth did finally get to make his first appearance for City on Sunday in the FA Cup loss to Doncaster Rovers, and made an impact, making a couple of decent saves in the 90 minutes, before saving the first Rovers penalty which looked to have been crucial, only for the hosts to eventually bow out.

After discussions with Brighton, the 23-year-old Halifax-born stopper will remain at the MKM Stadium for the remainder of the season and will now battle it out for the number one jersey with Pandur, given Anthony Racioppi has been told he can leave the club this month.

Croatian stopper Pandur has played in all 20 Championship appearances so far this season, and after a rather shaky start, has grown into the role of number one. The 24-year-old is sixth on the list when it comes to making saves - 71, which leaves him 14th with a save percentage of 68.2 per cent.

Last term, when Rushworth impressed on loan at Swansea City, the Brighton loanee played in all 46 league games, making 143 saves at a shot-saving percentage of 70.9.

Among his impressive displays this term, his showing at QPR on October 1 stands out given that's one of just five City wins so far this season. Pandur's blistering opening 10 minutes kept Rangers at bay, with the hosts having four good chances, before the Tigers went on to win the game.

There's a case for suggesting Rushworth's footwork is cleaner, and sharper, than Pandur's, which is one of the key reasons he was brought to he club in the first place, but the Croatian has certainly improved in that area.

Given the Tigers' defensive worries this season, another argument is that bringing in Rushworth now will make a positive difference to the overall feel of the team, and that sometimes, you have to make a big call, a big judgement, in a bid to try and change results.

Another point of view would be that Pandur will be at City beyond the summer, and unless Brighton sold Rushworth to the Tigers, he won't be, so is bringing in the loanee now likely to damage the Tigers' own player moving forward?

Dropping Pandur at Millwall would be viewed as a big decision outside the dressing room, but perhaps not so much inside it, and at some point, Rushworth will have to be given a chance in the Championship, you would suspect.

Ultimately, Selles, along with his coaching staff, will have to make a judgement call. One they believe is in the best interests of the team, and winning football matches. Selles is not here to win popularity contests, nor is he here to be sentimental, he has to be ruthless, just like his players. He says he's already made that call, but what will it look like come 11:30am on Saturday when the team news lands at The Den?

We've seen that already with the way in which he's told Racioppi and Chris Bedia they can move on, having already moved out Marvin Mehlem and Will Jarvis. Selles cannot allow himself to do anything other than make the call that he sees best for the team and City's bid to survive.
