Rule change impacting Reading as VAR use in FA Cup ties altered from previous years
Reading will not have a video-assistant referee [VAR] in use in any of their future FA Cup ties until at least Round Five, the FA have confirmed.
Entering at Round One for the past two years, the Royals beat Fleetwood Town and Harborough Town to set up a Third Round clash with Burnley at the SCL Stadium in January.
In previous years, VAR has been used at all Premier League venues from Round Three, with Manchester United famously seeing a goal ruled out against Paul Ince's Reading at Old Trafford in January 2023.
Confirming the news on Monday, the FA say that the banning of VAR in all venues until the Fifth Round 'ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part.'
VAR will be utilised for every match in the Fifth Round of the competition through to the Final at Wembley Stadium.
Ithas only been used in the Emirates FA Cup previously for matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to 'infrastructure, workforce and costs that are required for its operation.'
VAR is currently only enforced in the Premier League and European competitions, with the EFL yet to adopt the system.
