Former Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy got off to the perfect start as Leicester City manager by winning his first game in charge on Tuesday night, despite having just two training sessions with his new club.

The Dutchman’s appointment at Leicester was confirmed on Friday, just weeks after his departure from United following the appointment of Ruben Amorim. Van Nistelrooy was unbeaten in his four games in interim charge at United, winning three (including two against Leicester), and drawing one.

He watched from the stands as Leicester lost 4-1 against Brentford on Saturday, but took charge for the first time when West Ham visited the King Power Stadium in the midweek clash. He had an immediate impact, with Jamie Vardy putting the Foxes ahead after just two minutes.

After weathering the storm of some West Ham chances, it got better for Van Nistelrooy and Leicester in the second half with goals from Bilal El Khanouss and Patson Daka putting the game beyond the reach of West Ham despite Niclas Fulkrug’s 93rd minute goal.

The result moves Leicester up to 15th place in the Premier League, four points clear of the drop ahead of Wednesday night’s matches. "In the end you look at the result and the three points, in the position that we are in, it's vital," Van Nistelrooy told the BBC after the match.

"We know the level in the Premier League and we know every game we play that everything has to be right. We have to train and develop our defence, our counter attack, our possession. Lots of things to work on but very happy with the three points."

United’s 2-1 loss against West Ham earlier in the season under Erik ten Hag was the former manager’s final game in charge of the club, and led to Van Nistelrooy taking interim charge. The fact that he has overcome a team who Ten Hag failed to, after just a matter of days in charge, could speak volumes.

The manager’s appointment by Leicester has prompted excitement from the fans, with it taking just minutes for his name to be sung from the King Power Stadium terraces. The relationship is something that former boss Steve Cooper didn’t have in his five months in charge, but it’s something Van Nistelrooy is already building.

It’s an element, along with the trust of the players that will be vital for the rest of the season, according to former Brighton boss Graham Potter.

“You can do all the talking you want but if the players actually believe him and follow what he is saying then it can be very powerful," he told Amazon Prime. "The best way to get belief is by winning football matches.”

Despite his short time at the club, Leicester players have already hinted at their trust in the new man on social media. Vardy has shared a picture of him sharing an embrace with Van Nistelrooy when he was substituted in the second half, along with a blue heart emoji on Instagram.

Several others have also re-posted a post from Leicester’s official account showing Van Nistelrooy celebrating one of the goals, along with the full-time score, and a caption reading “Ruud’s roar.”

The 48-year-old steadied the ship at United following Ten Hag’s departure, his start at Leicester now look to have proven the club right to turn to him for those four games. It seems he has already had the same impact at the King Power Stadium, and will now look to build on the positive start when Leicester take on Brighton at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
