Former Manchester United assistant and caretaker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly eyeing a role in the Premier League following his temporary spell at Old Trafford.

The iconic Dutch striker was handed the role in the dugout after Erik ten Hag's dismissal, but following the appointment of Ruben Amorim, a decision was made that the 48-year-old would not continue in the North West.

In a report from the Mirror, it has been suggested that Van Nistelrooy has his sights set on a job in the Premier League having had a glimpse of top-flight management against Chelsea and Leicester City, during his interim spell at United.

Van Nistelrooy had 50 matches in charge of Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven as head coach and since his exit from United, there have been rumours circulating around possible roles in the Championship with Hull City, Coventry City after controversially sacking Mark Robins and Cardiff City.

Former international teammate Wesley Sneijder believes United will prepare Van Nistelrooy to take over at the Old Trafford helm on a permanent basis a few years down the line.

"If United are clever - and I am sure that this is what they are doing - they will get Ruud ready to take over in two or three years," he said.

Another ex-team-mate, former Tottenham playmaker Rafael van der Vaart, also said: "When Ten Hag was sacked, Ruud was thinking ‘I must take this chance and if I do well, something can work out for me.’ The club have decided to go a different way, but that does not spoil it all for him.

"Ruud’s moment will come. The job really suits him. Ruud is the king at Old Trafford. Everyone loves him because he is a legend. He absolutely loves the club and the club loves him."
