Marco Silva expressed sympathy for Ruud van Nistelrooy after his Fulham side inflicted defeat on Leicester City.

Van Nistelrooy faced a backlash from the stands at the King Power Stadium for substituting Bilal El Khannouss during the second half of the 2-0 Premier League loss.

El Khannouss was the first player substituted off, the Moroccan replaced by Kasey McAteer in the 64th minute. Boos from the crowd greeted the decision, with fans then chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing!” in the direction of the manager.

The toxic atmosphere extended beyond boos for the substitution too. After the second goal went in, there were chants of “sack the board” and “we want Rudkin out”, in reference to the club’s director of football. Chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha was in the stands watching on.

Silva said: “We all know what our job means and if you ask me if I have sympathy, of course I have. He doesn’t need it because he is a professional.

“We don’t take decision related with the reactions that we expect or not. He took a decision he wanted and expected to be the best for the team in that moment.

“I think we did grow throughout the game and I think we finished the last 20 minutes of the first half better and we were more ourselves.”
