Ruud van Nistelrooy could give Man United and forgotten star exactly what they need in January

January's transfer window is now just a matter of weeks away as teams prepare to conduct mid-season business which could, potentially, make or break their campaign.

For Manchester United, it could well be a busy one, both in terms of incomings and outgoings. Ruben Amorim has had just over a month to assess his squad and make decisions on who may or may not have a future at the club as well as highlighting areas he wants to improve, although that is easier said than done and particularly in the winter.

While United will be keen to back him in his first window, the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) could also have a say on the budget available to the new United head coach. United had a gross spend of just over £200million, second only to Chelsea, in the summer transfer window - which could have an impact on the money that can be spent mid-season.

One way that the transfer kitty could be boosted is by bringing money in through sales. United are thought to be "open" to selling over half of their squad when the window opens, with only certain stars deemed as untouchable.

One of the players who's predicted, at least in some circles, to move on is long-serving centre-back Victor Lindelof. The Sweden international has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and will have just six months remaining on his contract when the market re-opens.

United, therefore, risk losing him for nothing if he doesn't leave the club in January - while it's now being reported that former striker, assistant and interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy could offer a welcome solution.

According to The Boot Room, Van Nistelrooy is "interested" in taking Lindelof to Leicester City in January, although it's suggested that any deal could be a loan agreement with United paying a portion of the player's wages.

However, a deal could see Leicester play a loan fee, plus contribute to Lindelof's wages. It's a solution that will see United bring in some money, at least, and get a portion of his wages off the books.

That's a better scenario for United than paying his full wages for the next six months and then losing the player for nothing in the summer. For Lindelof, a move to Leicester would likely see him become first choice - while he would also be playing for a coach he knows, having worked with Van Nistelrooy at United.

There is, however, one catch. Leicester currently have their two available loan slots taken up.

Midfielder Facundo Bounanotte has been a key player, meaning they won't cancel his loan spell from Brighton. The club, though, have had less success with the temporary signing of striker Odsonne Edouard.

Indeed, he's yet to even get in the matchday squad under Van Nistelrooy. It's reported that the club are looking to cancel that loan deal in January to free up space in their squad and allow room for another arrival.

Amorim's preferred formation could also cast some doubts over a move. By playing three centre-backs, an exit for Lindelof could, possibly, leave United short on defensive cover - if they were to pick up one or two injuries, or with ongoing form issues for players in their starting XI.

United currently have six natural centre-backs in their squad, meaning there is effectively cover for every starter. A departure for Lindelof would mean that a replacement would have to come in - if Amorim wants the same number of options when January comes and goes.
