Ruud van Nistelrooy explains Leicester City issue as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall transfer return mooted
Ruud van Nistelrooy did not rule out Leicester City attempting to bring Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall back to the club, but did explain why it wouldn’t currently be possible.
The January transfer window is now open and business is expected at City as they look to strengthen their side and boost their chances of survival. With Dewsbury-Hall struggling for Premier League game-time since his £30m switch to Chelsea, the club have been linked with a move for the homegrown midfielder.
Enzo Maresca has hinted he may allow Dewsbury-Hall to leave, but it would likely only be on loan. And City wouldn’t currently be able to sign him on loan.

Premier League sides are only allowed a maximum of two players on loan from rival clubs at any one time, and City have Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton and Odsonne Edouard from Crystal Palace in their ranks. Van Nistelrooy was quick to make that point when asked about Dewsbury-Hall on Thursday afternoon.
The City manager said: “We’re looking at all options and we also know that with the two Premier League loans we have at the moment, you can’t have any more. So in that sense, you have to deal with the current situation.
“But as I said before, we’re looking at all possibilities to strengthen from my network and the club’s network. Every day we’re working together with Jon (Rudkin, director of football), with the scouts, with Martyn (Glover, head of recruitment), looking at all the possibilities from anywhere. That process is going really well, so we’ll see what comes out of it.”
Van Nistelrooy previously said it was “on the table” to consider Edouard’s future, with the Frenchman struggling to even get on the bench at the moment amid competition from Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka. But on Thursday, he suggested he may stick around.
“Odsonne is part of our squad,” he said. “He’s one of the two Premier League loans we have with Facundo Buonanotte. We expect them to be at the club.”
In any case, Dewsbury-Hall may not fit with City’s priorities right now. A centre-back, full-back, and winger are thought to be the focus for the club this month, with the form of the likes of Buonanotte, Bilal El Khannouss and Boubakary Soumare lessening the need for a new attacking or deep-lying midfielder.
