Manchester United icon Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted he was happy with the 'short and intense' job he did at Old Trafford after becoming interim manager for a brief spell.

Van Nistelrooy was given the temporary position after Erik ten Hag was sacked by Ineos following a historically bad start to the Premier League campaign. The ex-Dutch striker, who only rejoined the club in the summer as an assistant, steadied the ship at United masterminding two victories over Leicester City as well as a win over PAOK.

Upon Ruben Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford, Van Nistelrooy was released from his contract but was soon picked up by Leicester after they sacked Steve Cooper. Speaking to reporters in his first press conference as the Foxes' boss, Van Nistelrooy said: "It was a good period, short and intense.

"I was happy to help steady the ship. They’re now on a run of good results. I enjoyed being responsible and getting a connection with the team. That felt great to do. I’m now in a position to do it again."

Van Nistelrooy had managed PSV Eindhoven before moving to United's backroom team but credits the Reds for securing a role in the Premier League. "What happened after the games, the amount of interest that was there for me, I was astonished," he admitted.

"It was only four games. I had managed a full season at PSV and won the cup. I’ve been in coaching for a while. I had never got this reaction from the football world.

"It provoked this reaction and I was happy with that. I had conversations with different parties and made a decision that was right for me."

Van Nistelrooy's first game in charge of Leicester comes on Tuesday night when the Foxes host West Ham.
