Former Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has hinted that he could turn to his old club this January transfer window as he looks to strengthen Leicester City's squad.

The Dutchman was unveiled as Leicester's new manager weeks after leaving his role at Old Trafford following the appointment of Ruben Amorim. Van Nistelrooy returned to the club this summer - as assistant manager to Erik ten Hag - and also took charge of four games on an interim basis.

His task is to now help steer Leicester away from the Premier League relegation zone. He's now tipped to try and make additions to his squad in the January transfer window, and has been linked with some United players.

Ahead of his side's Premier League clash against Aston Villa, the ex-United striker spoke about potential incoming transfers. He was also asked about the possibility of using his contacts at United in the window.

"December gave a clear view for me in which positions the team needs help and improvement," he said.

"You can also look at injuries, what we have and how long they are out for.

"That's a part of where we want to strengthen. But it's important to keep that behind-closed-doors, because we don't want to weaken ourselves to do business."

Van Nistelrooy went on: "It's good that you will look at our squad, and where the injuries are at the moment, and make your conclusions. Internally we have made decisions on where we want to do it.

"Of course, I'm looking at my network, having played in a couple of countries and for more clubs. It's important to use my network in opportunities to strengthen the squad.

"We're looking at all possibilities to help the team reach its target. We're looking everywhere."

The latest United player to be linked with a switch to the King Power Stadium is young left-back Harry Amass. The Daily Mail claim that the Foxes are one of the club showing an interest in the 17-year-old.

The teenager is yet to make his competitive debut for the club, but was named on their bench in three of the four games Van Nistelrooy took charge of. He's yet, though, to make a matchday squad under Amorim.

Amass could see his opportunities reduce under the Portuguese - due to his preference for wing-backs instead of traditional full-backs. He could, therefore, look to move on in the window in search of more game-time.

Leicester currently have both of their Premier League loan spots taken up, though, meaning that there would also have to be an exit if a temporary deal was being looked at.
