Ruud van Nistelrooy insisted promises were being kept when he was asked about transfer support from the Leicester City board.

Reports on Thursday suggested the City manager is unhappy with the club’s lack of transfer business. So far this January, they have made just one signing, bringing in right-back Woyo Coulibaly from Parma for £3m.

But van Nistelrooy has not suggested publicly that there is a shortage of financial support or that the club are going back on their word. The Dutchman said prior to January that he had discussed transfers with the club during his job interviews and that he was told funds were available.

But with Profit and Sustainability Rules a concern for future seasons, City are working to a limited budget. Van Nistelrooy has previously said that City’s business has to be right for the long-term future of the club, and then said at the weekend that they have to “face reality”.

Asked after the 2-0 loss to Fulham if he was still getting the support from the club he expected, van Nistelrooy said: “Yeah, because we welcomed a new player (Coulibaly) in a position that we needed. We only have one right-back in the squad (James Justin) and he has to play everything.

“That’s a good start. We continue to look for the players to strengthen the squad within the possibilities. Of course, you look for as many. We have to face reality and do it within the possibilities. We’re trying very hard to do so.”

Moving players on would help City’s transfer business. They are set to sell Tom Cannon to Sheffield United for around £10m, while there are hopes that Crystal Palace will sell Odsonne Edouard, and so cancelling his loan and freeing up a spot for City.
