Swansea fans appear to be in a state of shock at the news that Coventry City are making a determined play to sign their influential skipper Matt Grimes.

The 29-year-old midfielder emerged as a key transfer target for the Sky Blues this week after two reported bids have been knocked back by the South Wales club, with Coventry understood to be preparing a third to get the deal over the line, encouraged by the players’ claimed willingness for a move.

A consistent and reliable performer who has played over 300 games for the Swans over the last ten years, Grimes plays as a defensive midfielder and is known for his technical ability and excellent reading of the game. He has been praised for his tackling, leading the Championship in tackles this season with 110.

Here’s what Swansea supporters have been saying about the prospect of losing their ‘best player’ to a Championship rival.

SCFC Oli: Selling Grimes would be mental at almost any time. Selling him in January is an act of self sabotage beyond all comprehension. Some don’t rate him. I’m afraid those people know nothing about this sport. We’ve already pressed the self-destruct button once. It can’t happen again.

Aaron Livo: I swear to god if we lose Grimes. We’re actually ******. What a shocking start under new ownership…

Azura: I actually don’t see how the club would come back from this mess.

James: Just announce relegation.

David: This would be unforgivable for the club.

Shropshire and Midlands Jacks: If we don’t get at least £15million for him it’s pathetic.

Dylan: He’s our best player by a mile, great passer and very composed. Only weakness is that he’s not physically the best. Probably wants to leave because he’s been here 10 years and we’ve been on a downward spiral the entire time.

Sam Hooper: I’ve never seen a player divide opinion amongst fans as much as him. Some think he’s the second coming of Iniesta and others think he can only pass sideways and backwards . The answer is somewhere in the middle. For me, a decent player. Technically very good.

Darren: Why sell our skipper now... We’re in a relegation scrap. We didn’t have enough experience in the squad especially with Joe Allen having to be time managed. He can go in the summer if that’s what he wants.

James: Given everything to this club, stuck by us for a decade despite interest almost every year. He’s finally fed up and I absolutely don’t blame him. Doubling his wage and a very ambitious football club to move to. Still a club legend no matter how petty you want to be

Gary Griffiths: We have to say no or we will be relegated.

Dave: Relegation it is.

Phil: Well, this could be interesting. Splits the fan base either way and if he actually wants to go it highlights our internal **** show...

Joey Daniel Waldron: Disaster.

Aaron Tippett: When you think Swansea ownership couldn’t get any worse. If this is true then Swansea’s chances of survival become even more difficult.

Turf: Can you blame him? 10 years of service, upheaval with the manager and a hefty pay rise. Lampard knows a thing or two about midfield play, too. I for one will wish Grimes nothing but the best, a superb servant to the Swans. Here before him, here after him… Money needs to be spent.

Ade Owen: Toxic atmosphere on Saturday, for sure.
