'Sad' Danny Rohl makes Coventry City claim that simply doesn't stack up
Danny Rohl claimed that his Sheffield Wednesday side “deserved” to beat Coventry City after “dominating” the FA Cup third round tie against their Championship rivals at the CBS Arena.
It’s true to say that the Sky Blues were forced to defend a fragile 1-0 lead late on in the game and eventually conceded an equaliser deep in stoppage time to take the tie to extra-time before it was decided on penalties, with Frank Lampard’s men booking their place in the fourth round of the competition following a 4-3 shootout success.
“Big credit to my team to come back again – we have to win this game,” said German coach Rohl. “We deserved to win this game, especially in the second half when we controlled the game. We dominate the game, we come to the final third with really good situations but if you only have three shots on target it’s not enough for all the things we are doing.”

Indeed, the facts of the match stats didn’t exactly back up what Rohl saw with his own eyes, with Wednesday only edging possession with 53 percent of the ball compared to 47 percent for Coventry overall, while the Owls managed seven attempts on goal, including just one shot on target compared to the Sky Blues who enjoyed 12 attempts, including three on target.
Frank Lampard's side also passed up two gilt-edged chances to double their lead in the second half when Ellis Simms fired too close to the keeper and Victor Torp's follow-up from the rebound was blocked, while Jack Rudoni had what looked like a perfectly good goal from a corner disallowed for a foul.
Rohl added: “To come to Coventry and to dominate the game like this, it’s where we are at the moment. But we lost this game and for me we have to decide this game before the penalty shootout. When you have so many situations, two against two, one-v-one, two against one situations and you don’t come to a dangerous finish, then there’s an issue here.
“It looks really nice what we are doing, and there was no feeling that the opponent had a solution against us. I think all-in-all, take the positives from this game but I am a little bit sad about the result at the end.”
