SAINTS striker Adam Armstrong will spend the rest of the season on loan at Championship side West Bromwich Albion, with the deal cleared.

The clubs attempted to push through the move in the final minutes of the winter transfer window on Monday and were left sweating on its status.

Saints and the Baggies had to wait until Tuesday morning before learning the FA and EFL decision over whether the move had been approved.

Armstrong, who scored 24 goals in the Championship last season, including the winner in the play-off final at Wembley, returns to the second tier.

He now links up with West Brom manager Tony Mowbray, who he previously enjoyed playing under at Blackburn Rovers.

It is expected that the Baggies will cover the majority of the 27 year old's wages and pay a loan fee to Saints for his services this season.

His future at St Mary's will likely be reassessed in the summer, with Saints also heading for relegation back out of the Premier League.

Armstrong netted just two goals in each of his three seasons in the top flight but has a combined 70 in his last three Championship campaigns.

West Brom sporting director Andrew Nestor said: “We are pleased to welcome Adam to The Hawthorns for the rest of the season.

"He has extensive experience in the Championship and a proven goalscoring record. Adam is an ideal fit for our squad and very much suits our style.”
