On Saturday, January 25, Salisbury Rugby Club's second team welcomed Bradford-on-Avon to play their league fixture postponed from the stormy weekend before Christmas.

The teams looked fairly well-matched, with Salisbury fielding a number of young players.

Salisbury opened the scoring with a try on 10 minutes from prop Mike Dauwalder, converted by fly-half Daniel Jugg. The pair repeated their double-act 15 minutes later to lead 14-0.

Bradford scored a converted try close to half-time and the teams went into the break with Salisbury leading 14-7.

Almost straight from the restart Bradford's flanker dummied to get past the Salisbury defender and ran in to score unobstructed behind the posts. The conversion levelled the scores at 14-all.

Midway through the half Garvey Ortiz made a great break down the right wing and looked as if he would be in to score, but a Bradford player caught him. The ref deemed this illegal and awarded a penalty try to restore Salisbury's lead.

On the half-hour mark full-back Ben Armitage dived in to score Salisbury's fourth try and secure the bonus point. Soon after, Man Of The Match Joe Feest crashed over for the fifth try, converted by Garvey Ortiz. With the last play of the game, Armitage dived over in the right corner for his second try and Salisbury ran out comfortable winners by 41 points to 19.

This was a very good result against a tidy and committed Bradford-on-Avon side. The performance of the younger players taking their early steps at senior level should give Salisbury a lot of optimism for the future.

Next Saturday, February 1, Salisbury's 1st XV welcome Dorchester for the return league fixture. They will be looking to turn the tables after suffering a heavy defeat at the away game earlier in the season.
