Sam Burgess may have extended his Warrington Wolves contract by a further year this summer, but that hasn't halted speculation about his future, and in particular an NRL coaching return.

The British rugby league legend joined the Wire on an original two-year deal ahead of the 2024 season before extending his contract until the end of 2026 back in July. Yet, on the other side of the world, reports kept emerging about Burgess taking the then vacant South Sydney Rabbitohs job, eventually taken by veteran coach Wayne Bennett.

Enjoying an outstanding playing career, Burgess won the 2014 NRL Premiership with the Bunnies and, post-playing, also took a coaching role with the club. Many figures within the game expect him to return to Australia one day, with the 35-year-old leading Warrington to a third-placed Super League finish and the Challenge Cup final in what was an impressive first season in charge of the club.

And while his commitment for the next two seasons is to Warrington, the former England Test forward holds no secret about his ambition to one day be a head coach in the NRL. Speaking on the Run Home with Joey and Fletch Podcast, Burgess was asked once again about coaching Down Under but insisted he still has a job to do with the Wolves.

"At some point, yeah," he said on an NRL move. "I mean, I obviously thought about it earlier, but now I’m here and we’re enjoying it. I’ll wait until the right opportunity comes up and wait until I’ve really finished the job here, which I want to do. So, I’m in no rush, but certainly at some point in the future. I’d like to think I’ll get there and have an opportunity to coach in the NRL at some stage."

Burgess will meet an NRL club in Las Vegas before their historic clash against Wigan Warriors on March 1. He will take his Warrington side to the United States for a full week, where they will train alongside four-peat Premiers Penrith Panthers, who meet Cronulla Sharks at the mega rugby league event at Allegiant Stadium, which is hoped to draw in a crowd of around 60,000 fans.

Warrington will spend the week in Nevada, lining up against Penrith in the lead-up to the four-game festival of rugby league, which also sees Canberra Raiders face New Zealand Warriors and England Women take on Australia Jillaroos. It will be the second time the two clubs meet, having trained at the Wire's base before Penrith's World Club Challenge clash with Wigan earlier this year.

"We’re in for the week, seven days, from Sunday to Sunday," Burgess explained. "We have a great connection with the Panthers boys. When they came over for the World Club Challenge, we did some opposed with them, and we'll have a day with those guys doing opposed sessions over in Vegas.

"We have a great little relationship with them; our academy fellas came out on a trip 18 months ago, and they trained out of the Panthers setup there. It’s a great club, obviously, with so much success, but beneath all that, the culture in the place is fantastic."

And on the Vegas event, which will undergo a second year after breaking ground nine months ago, he added: "It’s everywhere; there are so many people going from Warrington and Wigan.

"It’s almost the talk of the town at the moment. It’s such an exciting thing for the sport over here because it will be prime time on Saturday night on Sky Sports. The whole country is talking about it, and for rugby league, that’s a big thing.

"Sky Sports are pretty excited about it, and the fans are pretty excited about it. The game in general is excited about what it's going to be, and us and Wigan both had great years last year, so it will be a great contest."
