Sam Burgess makes an admission as Wire's pre-season ends
SAM Burgess admits his Warrington Wolves side “probably need another run” in order to be ready for the new Super League season.
And he admits that could change his selection plans for next weekend’s Challenge Cup trip to League One side Whitehaven.
The Wire rounded off their pre-season campaign by losing to Leigh Leopards in Toby King’s Testimonial match at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
It means Warrington head into competitive action having lost both of their pre-season friendlies following an earlier loss to Widnes Vikings – a game in which they fielded a youthful side.
Burgess’ front-line first-team players all got a run-out in this game before mass changes followed in the second half, but the head coach reckons they are still a little underdone.
“We probably need another run,” he said.
“We just had a quick chat about what we might do next week, but we’ll see the players in the morning and we’ll make more of an informed decision then.
“I was thinking about playing everyone next week but now, I’m not sure.
“It was a run-out. The game was okay early – it got scrappy in parts but that’s always the case at this time of the year when you’re making a lot of changes.
“We did some good stuff, but we did some average stuff as well.”
As was the case against Widnes, new signing Oli Leyland was perhaps the stand-out performer individually.
The former London Broncos man kicked two impressive touchline conversions as part of a confident display and with Leon Hayes ruled out until at least Round Five with hamstring and ankle issues, he has put himself in the frame to start the season alongside George Williams.
“He’s a good little player – a cheeky little player with plenty going for him,” Burgess said of his new scrum-half.
“He can kick a ball well and he pulled off a few nice passes tonight.
“He’s still working on his game and there’s still so many areas in which he wants to get better, but he’s great to have around. We really enjoy having him in camp.”
Burgess was, however, keen to save the last word for Testimonial man King, who set up Warrington’s second try by sending replacement winger Jake Thewlis over on the hour mark.
A crowd of just under 7,000 turned out to celebrate the centre’s 10-year first-team career, including an impressive travelling support from the Leopards.
“The Leigh fans turned up in great numbers, and our fans matched that as well,” Burgess said.
“I think there was about 7,000 in, which is fantastic for this time of year.
“Toby’s a great character who’s really well-liked in the community.
“It was probably the highlight of the night for me, seeing such a healthy crowd for a Testimonial game.”
